Subject: Modern Talking

Anyone remember (or have heard of) Modern Talking? They were an internationally successful Euro-Disco duo from Germany. Their biggest hit was Brother Louie which became their only Top 40 hit in both the UK and Canada. Sadly, they never saw any success in the United States

Tsk!
The impossibly 'pretty' German pair...
I only remember the three 'crossover' hits (which near-enough sounded the same!)
The reason that 'Brother Louie' was a big hit here while the others weren't?
Simple...it was played to death all over Europe during the summer of '86 and the returning British holidaymakers (no doubt wishing to relive their fortnight in the sun), ensured it sold by the bucketload when it gained a British release later that year...
I know...I was (ahem!) one of 'em!

They do sort of all sound the same
What still surprises me is that Brother Louie was a Top 40 hit here in Canada. International Hits have always done better here than in the States, some of which don't even chart in the U.S.

Well, if you insist...
You're My Heart You're My Soul: PP 4, WC 12
You Can Win If You Want: PP 6, WC 13
Cheri Cheri Lady: PP 10, WC 8
Brother Louie: PP 20, WC 6
Atlantis Is Calling (SOS For Love): PP 6, WC 8
Geronimo's Cadillac: PP 36, WC 3
Jet Airliner: PP 36, WC 3
You're My Heart You're My Soul (Remix): bubbling under
Brother Louie '98: bubbling under.
And that was it. I believe "Cheri Cheri Lady '98" was also released over here, but it didn't even make bubbling under section.

MT were a curiously European phenomena, but were hugely successful in Germany and all over Europe - infact, they are Germany's most successful pop duo if my information is correct in terms of sales.
They still enjoy a hardcore fanbase in Russia and some former Eastern block countries also.
The music just didn't fit with England or the US, but europeans have always embraced a slightly different culture of Europop, and MT seemed to seemed to thrive from that.
I work in Switzerland currently, and the funny thing is that you would struggle to find one German who is proud of MT. 'Modern Talking, they bring shame on Germany' was the light-hearted remark from my work colleague when 'Brother Louie' came on my office Ipod mini... ;D ;)

I was suprised my dad had even heard of them!
I found 74 1-star reviews for Bohlen's book "Nichts als die Wahrheit"
About the bringing shame thing- I've read some people say something similar about Sarah Connor in their one star reviews for some of her albums-only in German they say something along the lines of "poor Germany"

;D Hahaa, well full credit to MT... they were good at what they did i.e making a good brand of cheesy, catchy pop music!
I saw advertised on German TV the trailer for the cartoon 'Dieter' which is a real mickey-take of Bohlen's career in a cartoon format. Has anyone seen this yet? It looked dead comical! :D

Wow! I had no idea Modern Talking were so unpopular ;D
Has anyone heard of the group Blue System? A project formed by Bohlen after the demise of MT in 1988. They had a few good dance hits in the 90's, but nothing to shout about from rooftops lol
