Subject: Dukes of Hazzard General lee question

Written By: stevefrom78 on 03/25/06 at 12:49 pm

Does anyone remember an episode of the Dukes where they explained the reasons for the Generals specs? You know, why it's orange, why the doors were  welded shut, the confererate flag, and of course the big 01. I bought the first season thinking it would be on there but is wasn't!! Oh, by the way...was anyone as dissapointed by the movie as I was? The scene where the General was on the freeway was very weird!! (I still have my Dukes of Hazzard Bed set)

The car's name was in reference to Confederate General Robert E. Lee.  The primary purpose of the General Lee was for dirt track racing, so the doors were welded shut becuase it is a common trait of racing cars

I still have my Dukes of Hazzard bedsheets also.  I actually really enjoyed the Dukes movie.  Sure it wasn't even close in comparison to the TV series, but I was thoroughly entertained :)

I always thought it was strange that even though Daisy was the only one ever working at the Boar's Nest, that she always left the bar, without a word to anyone and without anyone filling in for her and yet, she was never fired. Further, if Bo and Luke and Daisy are all cousins and Uncle Jessie is not the father of any of them, then exactly how ae they all related? I mean, how many uncles are there?

Where else was Boss Hogg going to find a set of legs like that? He knew why guys came into his place.

There must have been at least four Duke brothers. Jesse, Bo's dad, Luke's dad, and Daisy's dad. I think the rest of them were either dead or in prison from the moonshining days. Either that or they had to live with Jesse due to their probation or something weird like that. I can't remember.

Confederate Flag Stripped from 'Dukes of Hazzard' Car

By Elizabeth Durand

It's time to wave bye-bye to the Confederate flag — from the "Dukes of Hazzard" car, at least.

That's right, in a somewhat controversial decision, Warner Bros., the studio that owns the theatrical, DVD and licensing rights to the franchise, has decided to remove the flag from all future versions of General Lee.

ut how do Bo and Luke Duke feel about this move?

There's no official statement from the fictional cousins just yet, though a spokesperson from the "Dukes of Hazzard" toy company confirmed, "Starting January 1, 2013, all 'Dukes of Hazzard' General Lee vehicles will not be allowed to be produced with the Confederate flag on the top of the vehicle."

According to the toy rep, the order came directly from the powers-that-be at Warner Bros., which no longer wants to promote an item with the Confederate flag on it. Which, we kinda get, but still, we're talking about General Lee here — and we're pretty sure there are going to be many fans who aren't going to like this change.

Per ScreenCrush, this move only specifically includes merchandising, but, since the studio is currently developing a new "Dukes of Hazzard" movie (yes, another one!), it seems logical they might enforce the same "no flag" policy with the car in the upcoming flick.

We'll just have to wait and see whether this iconic car gets a brand new look, but in the meantime, can we just celebrate the fact that Jody Hill (of "Eastbound and Down" fame) is signed on to direct this next reboot? If anyone can bring these boys back to their original glory, we're pretty sure it's this guy— with the flag or not.

I don't know specifics about Dukes of Hazzard, I can only answer generally.

Hup hup hup!

In 1981, they gave Sonny Shroyer his own show.  It didn't last a season, but it sher was fun!

I had a crush on Enos back in the day. Even scratched his name in a door back home (still there).  I was able to get an episode of Enos the TV show on DVD (just one) from ioffer.com a few years back.

Sonny Shroyer acted like an idiot during one of the reunions.  I think it was an extra on the First Season DVD.  Rather disappointed in his behavior so I'm not sweet on him anymore.  :P

I'm kinda bummed out about that, and I'm grateful that you remembered this thread.

I'm not gonna get into the question of whether the people who flew it were the Good/Bad Guys in the Civil War: the point of civil wars is that they're never civil, they suck, because (when the dust finally settled), a bunch of Americans realized they'd been shooting at other Americans, and both groups of Americans decided to knock it off!

I'm just gonna say that for those of us who didn't grow up in the South (OK, and who grew up without a lot of melanin in our skin :), The Dukes of Hazzard was probably our first (and only) exposure to the stars-and-bars, and in the context of the show, it didn't represent racism. It represented rebellion - and rebellion was cool, regardless of the cause, and that's the only reason the Dukes had the stars-and-bars on the roof of their car. This is a pop culture board; I think we can all agree that billions of dollars' worth of records and movies have been sold on the principle of teenage rebellion since the invention of recorded music and film, and it's not going to change any time soon.

If you're a teenager who's too young to drive, and you're watching a show like Dukes of Hazzard, you're not thinking about politics. You're thinking about a couple of guys who named their car after a General who led "rebels", who painted the "rebel" flag on its roof, and who went hauling ass through the backwoods of Deep Southistan while making a mockery of the law.

Now, it just so happened that the law in Hazzard County was incompetent, corrupt, and often both. But to a young adult, that broad brush could be applied to any authority from your parents, to your teacher, to the local cop who pulled you over for the first time.

I found a DVD box set of Duke of Hazzard season 3 for $7 at a local thrift store.
I snapped it up and starting watching eps that night. In one of the eps, Enos was putting his resume out to all these different police agencies but none would hire him. Finally at the end, after arresting some big time criminals, he got accepted to a precinct in LA I think it was. That's when I remembered, Enos had a spin off show!!
I had completely forgotten that up until that point. (Was a huge Dukes fan back when I was a wee lad)
I'll bet that Dukes episode we watched was the send off to his new show. I wonder if it's available for purchase. Might be interesting to check out.

They should replace the Battle Flag with the First National Flag of the Confederacy.  It wouldn't be so provocative, and it would look pretty badass on the General!

I'm with you on that, but it'd never work - the target demographic for the show would confuse it with the Betsy Ross design, and wonder why the Dukes defected to the Yankees... or to Georgia!

When I was a kid we used to play "cops-and-robbers" on our bikes (which was basically a fancy name for bike tag), and everyone wanted to be the "cops" (probably because of the Adam-12 reruns that were contstantly on in the mid/late 70's) until the Dukes of Hazzard came on, then everyone wanted to be the "robbers."  ;D

In hindsight, I imagine real law enforcement officers probably weren't big fans of this show back then.  :P

Being a person of "color" I never really gave a rats *ss about the confederate flag on the General Lee. I watched the show like most other kids, it was a live action cartoon and didn't really put too much into the symbol of the flag or how it was going to be seen to be represented in the south or the north so to speak.

Now my BIGGEST concern was the amount of Dodge Charges they wrecked for that silly show. They destroyed somewhere between 255 and 400 Dodge Chargers and thats a damn sin.

The Dodge Charger was one of the last truly big bad*ass muscle cars of the late '60-early 70's and theres not that many of the around. Love 'em or hate 'em, the Dodge Charger had style and presence.

What the show did is make a rare car even more rare and even a banged up used one now commands in the high teens to as high as $30K for a good condition one...which is nuts for a car that sold for $3500 new.

What is GREAT is the amount of silly General Lee paint jobs done on cars that are NOT Dodge Chargers...
