Subject: Do the '80s seem like another century?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 03/09/06 at 12:30 pm
I'm going to say "They will soon". Our Internet and information society is too primitive now to really make the '80s seem 100 years ago, but give it twenty or thirty years and people will see the Cold War era the same way we see the pioneer days of the 1800s.

Maybe it's the optemist in me (i.e. of not wanting the '80s -- my childhood era I'm so fond of -- to really seem or look "old"), but I really don't see the world in general looking WAY different from the '80s for a long time.
However, I do think minute things will start looking notably different by 2015ish. Hell, just the other day, one of the banks around here upgraded their typical ATM's to "internet-y" ones with touch button screens that do that typical "ding" whenever you push a button. That seemed very hi-tech to me! When I deposited my last check, I had to go a little slower just 'cause I was so used to the old ones. :D
So yeah, it'll be things like that more and more. But the average street, mindset and basic hangouts/ways of life won't make the '80s seem truly "old/last century" IMO. Hell, I think 1969 looked way more "old" in 1985 than 1985 will look even in 2020.

^No seriously I woulnt say the 80's that old yet. Heck I was born in the 80's so to call them old is to call me old and i'm not ready to do that just yet ;). 1969 probably looked older in 1985 than 1989 did last year(at least from a tech and overall feel standpoint). I think that by comparison 1885 probably seemed like another century by 1906 but 1985 just dosent fell that old yet.

I don't think the '80s will look like "the pioneer days" by the 2010s or 2020s...our daily way of life will be essentially the same.

A whole lot changed from 1880-1910. Enough that by 1910, 1880 really seemed like "last century" unless there's huge tech changes in the next 4 years 1980 will only seem like it was 15-20 years ago as opposed to 30.

Yeah. When historians, in, say the year 2500 are looking back on all this, I think 1895-1920 will always be looked at as the era where conveinces, industries and way of life changed the most. And, to a lesser extent, roughly 1964-1992 for pop culture/fashion/technology.
We're unlikely to see anything as drastic as that again, at least not to the same extent and speed. However, I do wonder when our daily life will notably change again. I'm sure in 2100 we won't be living like we are now, or will the future just be a WAY more technologicalized late 20th Century/early 21st century? ;)

^I'd say it'll be somewhat more technollogicalized late 20th/early 21st century. I'm just not sure that pop culture will ever change as much as it did in that '64-'92 time period. Pop culture's been stuck in neutral since about 1993 and really shows no signs of getting back in drive.

No.......I mean, were the 80s devoid of electricity, running water, television and telephone service?

No, the 80's was part of the century that I was more comfortable in, for any number of reasons.
THIS feels like another century though :P

I agree with what Marty McFly said. 1895-1925 will probably be seen as THE big change period when we started living like we do now, basically, and will probably live for all of my life. Between the '60s and the '90s, there were massive social/moral/sexuopolitical changes...probably 1985-2015 will be seen as another, smaller, change in daily life with the internet.

Sometimes, the 80s seem a long time ago to me, but I'd say no. Sure, the decade *is* literally part of another century...but I don't see it as being that far removed from our own time and place. Maybe I feel that way because I lived through the decade.

I don't know if I'll live to see it...or be young enough to experience it when it's happening.

To me, the more I look back it seems like it was a long time ago, but NOT that far off. I mean, yes, the 80's were another century, but still, in general only at the very most - 26 years ago - which isn't a long time. I was thinking that when I was born, 26 years prior to my birth was 1956, which when I was growing up didn't seem all that far away - well now that it's going to be 50 years ago, now 1956 does seem like a long time ago. But, you gotta put things in perspective. I mean my dad was born in 1949 and I always wondered what it was like for him to grow up without all the spoiled stuff we have now - well, it's simply adapting to your surroundings. I mean, 20 years ago this stuff would have been cool, but it wasn't a necessity. We were all still living and breathing fine without it.

Yeah, people don't realize that you don't really need a computer, cell phone, etc. Once I said I didn't have a computer because mine wasn't working for about a month, and they said "having a computer is like breathing", which it really isn't. Some people just can't separate themselves from what they have now.

I voted no -- definitely no. Sure, fashions, haircuts, and music of the '80s were a little different from today's, but those differences were mostly superficial and cosmetic; people's basic attitudes and dispositions were the same. In fact, the people themselves were the same -- unless you're a teenager, you were probably around in one form or another in the '80s. Even the '70s don't seem all that dated to me yet; people who came of age in the '70s and '80s are still very much alive right now, and I can watch movies from the '70s (nevermind the '80s!) without finding them all that old-fashioned, personally. Lots of trends from the '80s -- music videos, teen movies, romantic comedies, blockbuster action movies, special-effects extravaganzas, bubblegum pop music, environmental activism, etc. -- have continued through the '90s and are still around in the '00s. Huge '80s celebrities like Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, and Tom Cruise are still around and doing fine (while the rest just appear on reality TV shows). And then there's that '80s nostalgia movement that's more or less under way, because people who spent their childhoods in the '80s (like me) are in their 20s and in college now, and want to bring a lot of things back. As a result of all of this, the decade still feels very close in spirit -- just distant enough to be remembered and missed as a decade, but way, way too close to feel like a different century. I'm only 22 years old, and I can still remember the '80s decently well.
But when I watch, say, Gone With the Wind or Casablanca, or see old World War II footage, it easily feels like a different era to me. We wouldn't even need to ask if it feels different, because it's a no-brainer. But I just do not get that same sense from Ferris Bueller's Day Off or Indiana Jones, you know what I mean? ;)

To me, in many ways the '80s do seem like another century.
I was a teenager then, going to school instead of work. Listening to LP's instead of CD's, watching video tapes instead of DVD's, andusing my 48K Spectrum instead of a PC.
Television was different, Top of the Pops was something to look forward to, waiting a week to see the latest pop video, instead of simply tuning into MTV or another music channel. There was also only three or four channels instead of the countless channels we have today. TV also used to closedown just after midnight, playing the national anthem before emitting a high-pitched noise to wake up anyone that had fallen asleep in front of the TV.
There were playing fields, where houses stand today. There were many more little independant shops selling sweets, cakes, bread and other things. Where today there are either more houses or mobile phone fascia shops.
Re-development may improve the value of houses in the area, but takes away the character, turning them into 21st Century clone towns. In the town where I live they keep bring up the subject of 'What shall we do with the Market Square?'
Why do anything with it? It's as though sometimes things seem to change for change's sake.
I think the further time goes on, and the more things change, the '80s feel more like another century. I'm not stuck in the 80's, I enjoy a lot of things about today. Whether it was simply being younger, or living in a different time, I fondly remember what a fun and carefree time the '80s were.

In alot of ways the '80s was the beginning of the current era that we're in, and I think we'll probably be able to group 1980-2010 as one long era historically, with the adult dominance of baby boomers, conspicuous consumption, the acclimation of new social ideas to the mainstream, deindustrialization, corporate raiding, etc. Alot of the changes that came to be really apparent in the '90s were already beginning seriously in the '80s, more in some areas than others.
I think cities (in particular Northeastern ones) were alot more like they are now in the '80s, generally...the country seems to have changed more, though. My area hasn't changed very much, with the exception of the influx of some big box stores but not enough to destroy area retail, more Manhattanite yuppies, and more ethnic diversity. We still have tons of independently owned stores that have higher per square foot sales ratio than the big chains, and in some cases downtowns have gotten better, with the help of small businesses.

In fact, my video "Lazy Brokeback" got over 10,000 views.
