Subject: What's more '80s - synths or cheap-sounding drum machines?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 01/20/06 at 3:49 am

Both definitely, but to me the drum machines date the '80s even more.  Keyboards can be from other decades, although certain keyboard motifs sound definitely '80s, like that "dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum" thing.  You know, the whip sounds, fake snares.  That late '80s maracca/cowbell thing too.

BTW right now I'm listening to Depeche Mode's "Work Hard". It has both.

I agree, cheap-sounding drum machines are more 80's than synthesizers.

Keyboards used to have analog technology giving them that funky unique sound. Phil Collins, used to use an old analog rhythm machine. "Sussudio" is an example.
