Subject: This Is Spinal Tap

Anyone seen this?  I can't believe it's from 1984.

Yes!  I've seen This Is Spinal Tap many-a-time and it never ceases bust my gut!
;D

It was set in the year 1982, but it's amazing how long it has remained relevant satire.  Fans have long speculated on what band Spinal Tap was parodying.  I've heard with some authority that it was the band Status Quo, but I doubt it was any particular band.  I do see a lot of similarity to the Led Zeppelin documentary The Song Remains The Same.  However, like all great satire, it saturates it's subject with references.  Spinal Tap epitomized the life and times of hard rock bands to the point where rock bands themselves all took a copy of the video on tour with them!
As the guy from Quiet Riot commented:
"Spinal Tap's 'Shark Sandwich' album had a two-word review (sh*t sandwich), we came out with an album in 1985 called 'Condition Critical,' it got a two-word review 'Condition Terminal'!

Even funnier is the fact that kids in my school thought that Spinal Tap was a real band when This Is Spinal Tap came out....and then Spinal Tap became a real band.  The guys all looked at eachother and said, "Let's do it, let's go on tour!"  And they did!

My favorite number in This Is Spinal Tap?  "Stonehenge"
Nigel: "...And, Oh 'ow dey danced, the li'l children of Stone 'enge..."

"The problem may have been that there was a stonhenge monument
on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf."
What a classic line.

The band did have drummer problems:
John "Stumpy" Pepys...Died...Gardening Accident
Eric "Stumpy Joe" Childs...Died...Choked On Vomit
Peter "James" Bond...Died...Spontaneous Combustion
Mick Shrimpton...Died...Onstage Explosion
Joe "Mama" Besser...Missing,Presumed Dead
Richard "Ric" Shrimpton...."No one knows what happened to Ric,
none of the band members thought to ask each other. We've also heard
that he sold his dialysis machine for drugs, and we assumed he died."

I found a pretty funny website, where you can purchase a "special edition" of TIST on DVD. The original 1984 version appears to be out of print.

A film I haven't seen yet but think I should make the effort one day

;D  Yea! that part cracked me up!! its an 11!!!!

I'd heard about this part of the film and spotted a reference to this in a Dr Who episode earlier thid year.  He was doing something with his sonic screwdriver and wasn't getting quite enough power out to destroy whatever it was so he turns it from 10 to 11!

I absolutely love this movie. Every music fan should be required to watch it.

Nigel: "Ah, this is special, too. Look, see, still got the, uh, the old tagger on it. See, never even played it. See?"
Marty: "You just bought it and... (He points at it)"
Nigel: "Don't touch it. Don't touch it."
Marty: "I wasn't gonna-- I wasn't gonna touch it."
Nigel: "No, don't touch it."
Marty: "I was just pointing at it. I..."
Nigel: "Well, don't point even. It can't..."
Marty: "Don't even point?"
Nigel: "No, it can't be played. Never, I mean, I can't..."
Marty: "Can I look at it?"
Nigel: "No."
Marty: "Don't look at it?"
Nigel: "No, you've seen enough of that one."

I also love this movie, and both CDs the band has released.  I watch it every few months, and it still cracks me up as much as it did 20+ years ago.

I always thought the band was taken off of Led Zepplin and The Rolling Stones.  If you look at the Stones, they have "reinvented" themselves many times.  Starting as a kind of Skiffle band (like The Beatles), they progressed to "London Pop", Rock, metal, aand even a phase as Glam and Disco.  But even in their 60's, they jump around on stage in tight spandex and leather, trying to act like they are still in their 20's.

And while both CDs are great, I actually prefer the second one, Break Like The Wind.  In it, they did a full version of All The Way Home (which was taken from a half-verse sung in the original movie).  And one of my ultimate favorites.  That song is untitled, but commonly refered to as Now Leaving On Track 13.

In fact, Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight has been my opening song when I DJ for over 20 years.  The first time I heard it, it instantly replaced the two songs I used previously to open with )"Rock & Roll All Nite" by Kiss, and "I'm Allright" by Kenny Loggins).

I got it on DVD awhile, luckily.

"The review for "Shark Sandwich" was merely a two word review which simply read "**** Sandwich".

I have never really watched The Simpsons.  I just could'nt get into it.  But I made sure to watch when that episode came on.  It was right after they made "Breaks Like The Wind", and it was the episode titled "The Otto Show".

And typical for a Tap show, they had stage problems.  Their inflatable Satan deflated, and there were puddles all over the place because they did not melt the Hockey Rink soon enough before the show.

And of course Otto running the band's bus off of the road and it bursting into flame.  This and the Watermellon Death of AC-DC are the only musician deaths I can think of in tv or movies.
