Subject: Archie Bunker's Place

Written By: Carl on 01/13/06 at 8:52 am

This show was mostly very early 80s, so I guiess I can post it here.

I think Carroll O'Connor's character of Archie was less cutting edge in this show, as far as race relations and other controversial topics go. He seemed to have mellowed a bit. He hired a black housekeeper, Ms. Canaby I believe the name was, don't know the actress' name. He had a waiter who was homosexual, and, he even had a short relationship (romantically) with an hispanic woman. As I mentioned, I wasn't a big fan of this show,as it lost a lot of it's fire, but it had some intersting episodes. The acting of stars like Martin Balsam and Ann Meara were very good.

I would so love to see Archie Bunker's Place again.  I liked it better than All in the Family, only becuase they finally got rid of Edith.  I never could stand her  ;D

I don't have a satellite, even if I did, TV Land doesn't come in the package.  We have a Canadian version called "Deja View" instead

Last week I watched some show about former child actors hosted by the guy who played Peter on the Brady Bunch.  They had a short clip of Danielle Brisebois, who was in "Archie Bunker's Place."  She stated that she was in the group The New Radicals, who had a hit in 1998 called "You Get What You Give."

Yep.  She was the back-up vocalist on all of their songs

I've seen very little of this show when they had it on tv land a few years back. I would say that what I saw was more serious and not quite as funny as All in the family.

It was a good show and yeah, Archie did soften a bit. But I think it was a good chance b/c he was learning to think better.

Archie without Edith was like Abbot without Costello, but they made the show work OK for the most part.  I used to watch it in reruns in the mid-'80s.  I'd love to see it again.  I hope TV Land airs the series.
Carroll O'Connor had a lot of creative control, which kept the network from doing really idiotic things like bringing Edith back as a ghost (which they wanted to do), but he did make a couple of huge gaffs.  The biggest one was for the episode introducing Sally Struthers' shortlived spinoff Gloria.  They had Gloria fly out to New York and go into one of her awful crying jags about how the Meathead went nutso-paranoid and tried force her and Joey to go with him to live on a hippie commune (uh, the "hippie commune" thing was long over by the early '80s), and when they wouldn't go, he abandoned them and eloped to the commune with "the homecoming queen."  WTF?  I mean that's some REALLY dumb writing.
The idea of giving Struthers her own spinoff was ludicrous to start with.  Gloria Bunker-Stivic was the weakest character on All In The Family.  Struthers was a crummy actress, and why the creative element behind the show thought her constant whining and crying jags were amusing is beyond me!
Anyway, for ABP, they did manage to develop the teenaged Stephanie Mills into a passable character.  Furthermore, they brought back the Meathead dynamic when they had Archie's niece "Billie Bunker" (Denise Miller) move in, and hook up with the young liberal lawyer Gary Rabinowitz (played by Barry Gordon, who once served as president of S.A.G.).  And there was good banter between Archie and the regular fellas at the bar.  Martin Balsam was a great addition to the cast, and they made better use of Jason Wingreen's talents as Harry Snowden, the bartender. Wingreen appeared as a frquent guest on AITF, but his character never developed.  My favorite underdog, Barney Hefner (Allan Melvin) was a regular, too!
Of course, for pathos' sake they used to bring around Stephanie's drunken bum of a father, Floyd Mills from time to time.   ABP was no AITF, but it was good as a run-of-the-mill sitcom.  Also, I thought Anne Meara was underused in her role as a cocktail waitress.  Trivia:  Jerry Stiller once appeared on an episode entitled "Veronica's Ex" (episode 1.23, March 9, 1980).  Thanks IMdb.com!

That's one show I don't remember seeing.  I think Maxwell's right thought, I cann't imagine watching Archie without Edith.  True the voice was irritating but that was also what made her funny as well as her expressions.  What cracks me is when she gets it, then you imagine lights comming on.  That's what's funny.

TV Land does run Archie Bunker's Place occasionally, but they just recognize it as "All in the Family".

Last weekend during the All in the Family 35th Anniversary marathon, at least one episode of Archie Bunker's Place was broadcast.
