What was your favorite year of the 80's? Mine is 1988. A lot of good music came out that year.

Well, I was in 1990, so I didn't (obviously) experience any of the 80s first hand.
But, musically, 1980-85 is all awesome. Movies; 1985. Politics, bleh. 1989 because of Berlin Wall I guess.
TV, 1988 or 1989. 80s TV sucked for some reason.

Donnie, are you saying you were born in 1990? Because your profile doesn't seem to add up with this. Your profile says you're 35, or are you really 15 and it was a typo. Just wondering as it doesn't seem to add up right..

Well, I remember 1988 fondly more than any other year of the 80's. Other years stand out for other reasons, but 1988 is the year I can fully remember being around and doing stuff. I was about 6 to 6 1/2 years old by the end of the year.

Well, in the Tangent Universe I'm in I'm 35, but before I changed time I was born in 1990 :)
BTW the world's ending in 28 days. Frank the Rabbit told me. ;)

Definitely 1984... despite all of the dire predictions in the George Orwell novel, this will go down as one of the greatest and most pivotal years in human history... so much happened in that span of 365 days, socially and culturally... what a year! :)

I think politics and economy were the only "depressing" part of the 80's (1980 = Iran hostage crisis. 1982 = recession. 1983 = Beirut bombing. 1987 = black Monday '87, etc). 1989 did seem like the beginning of an entry into the 21st century, and the 90's (though it wasn't really developed until the latter half of 1991).
Anyway...
1984 is my favorite pop culture year - movies and music especially, as well as the overall feel. Everything was really alive and exciting that year.
For TV, I'd say it's a cross between 1987 and 1989 (I guess we should throw '88 in there too, just by default). Full House debuted in '87. The Simpsons and Seinfeld debuted in 1989, even though they were really 90's shows for the most part.
1987 is definitely my favorite personal year. I was 5 and 6 and really enjoying myself (the last year before I started 1st grade - just having fun with video games, and spending time with my family and all that).

My favorite pop culture year is easily 1984. The atmosphere at that time was electric.
Personally, for me 1987 and 1988 are tied.

1984 is definitely the core of the '80s ... 1980-83 is all a little earlish and even by 1985 the 80s was (slowly) becoming the '90s.
By '88 I believe people started saying things like "near 21st century" and such. Of course, '88-2000 is different in some ways from the post-9/11 21st Century, but really is the precursor.

1984 definitely! I got my C-64, heard Madonna for the first time, 2 Olympics, Band aid, Orwell, cool music (New wave, heavy rock), cool movies (Karate Kid, Ghostbusters)
Another years which stand out were 1986 or 1987 when I really started to listen to the pop music & hair metal

1980 and most of '81 still had a strong 70's presence. Late '81 and '82 (while mostly 80's) still hadn't quite overtaken every aspect of late 70's culture. Hell, even 1983 had a teeny bit left.
They peaked in 1984, no doubt. This was as "80s" as it got. :)
No, 1985 wasn't "the 90s", but you have to admit, rap started entering the mainstream as early as 1986 (Run DMC, Beastie Boys, etc). By 1988 it was a force to be reckoned with. There were also movies about the rising urban culture, such as Do the Right Thing in the late 80's.
That was a far cry from early John Hughes movies, "Thriller" and Valley Girl talk.
The 90's took a real presence in late 1991 (probably fully by 1993), but that doesn't mean traces didn't start creeping in several years before. Stuff don't happen overnight. ;)

Do you mean on a personal level, or the pop culture/common stuff?
If it's the former, I'm sorry to hear that, but I kinda know how that is. Both in the very early 90's, and again around '95, I wasn't having the best time in my own life either.
P.S. If it's the latter, I'm gonna have to disagree (respectively). ;)

(I'm actually curious 'cause I like all points of view - it's interesting to me), but are you into newer or older stuff?
If it's older, were you into the more nostalgic, 50's/60's influenced stuff of the 80's (i.e. movies like Dirty Dancing or even BTTF 1 ;) )? There were also alot of songs from older artists -- Starship's "We Built This City", Steve Miller's "Abracadabra", the Beach Boys' "Kokomo", and tons of Billy Joel songs, etc.
Stuff like that could've appealed to people who liked older pop culture.
On the other end, some late 80's stuff was beginning to be "90s-ish" for those more into what's out there today.

I would say more older stuff. I stopped listening to contemporay music around 1990 or so (with a few exceptions). But during the 80s, I can't say if I was MORE into the 50s/60s influenced stuff or not. I do like Dirty Dancing and BTTF but I also like a lot of other movies that came out in that decade, too. Two of my all-time favorite movies were from the 80s-Trading Places and Crimes of Passion-which both took place in the 80s without that nostalgic edge that many movies did have.

Answering a thread is not mandatory as far as I know. :P
Anyway, I just thought it was kind of interesting to be posting on a board dedicated to a decade that you apparently did not enjoy. I didn't particularily like the 90s so I would have no interest in discussing nostalgia on the 90s forum and hence do not even visit it. Just an observation, no offence was intended. :)

I cannot choose only one year as my favorite, because I love the whole decade!
Every single year was relevant in my life because of a music record or a film.

My answer was stictly personal. As for the pop culture of the decade, I enjoyed the music/movies. (Well, the hair was a bit outragous ;D ). But I am with you about the pop culture of the 90s-which is why I hardly go into that section. But I do come to this section to discuss the pop culture of the decade. You are right that I didn't have to answer the question but I chose to do so.

Yeah, I think '89 was one of the best years ever for movies (Batman, Indiana Jones 3, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Major League, Field of Dreams, Do the Right Thing, the Abyss, etc.). I was hoping the box 2005 would be similar to '89 with the new Batman movie, but instead it went down as the WORST year at the box office, thus making it the opposite of 1989.

I think going to the movies was a bigger deal back in the 80's because even though we had VCR's and cable, this still was relatively new for a lot of people, and so going to the movies was still rather cheap in comparison, and therefore, more people went. I remember going to the movies a whole lot more then than I do now. Even twelve years ago, the movies seemed more of a big deal because we weren't super exposed to DVD's or downloading.

Well...This question is hard to answer. I have different 'favorite years of the 80's for different reasons.
Personally...My favorite year of the 80's was 1980/81 and 1986. In 1980/81 I lived with my Mum in the house Id lived in all my life up to this point. In mid 1981 my soon to be step father moved in with us and kind of messed things up a little, but nothing I couldnt get used to. In 1986 I was 14 and I had my first love, was in year 8 at school, and I had a pretty good social life.
Musically...1980 through to 1984 had the best music of the entire decade IMO. Im a huge 1970's fan, and there was a spill over effect from 1979 to early 1981 as far as music goes. Myself, I consider 1980 to be the '11th' year of the 1970's, even though it really wasnt. Just look at any compilation album from 1981 to 1984 to see what I mean about great music.
Movies...There werent many stand out movies of the decade, although Id have to say 1983 was a great year simply because of the third Star Wars movie: Return Of The Jedi. Other movies from that decade I liked were: Empire Strikes Back, the Indiana Jones series, The Colour Purple, Empire Of The Sun, Howard: A New Breed Of Hero (yes, yes I liked it a LOT), among others.
Fashion wise: 1984/85 was the best. Here in Australia we had fluro-everything: Socks, shoes, T-shirts, caps, etc. Hot colours were IN. Lets not forget the break-dancing craze and the fashion that brought in, and the Michael Jackson inspired jackets.
So...To choose my favorite single year from all that...
1981. It was tough...But 1981 had great music, great movies, and personally it was pretty good too.

It's definitely 1989, both in the world as a whole and in my personal life as well.
1989's the year that the oppressive, totalitarian governments in the Soviet satellite states started to collapse and the iron curtain fell. It was also the year that Nelson Mandela was released from prison in South Africa.
And in my personal life, 1989 was when I was 9 years old, and I was a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan. I also used to love watching English and Italian football on tv(I remember Liverpool beat Everton to win the FA Cup in a thrilling game). And I had tons of fun playing with my action figures and playing outside and riding my bicycle with my friends everyday!
