Yes, the whole soundtrack to the TV show "Miami Vice" by Jan Hammer is brilliant. From it, I'd pick "Crockett's Theme" as the best instrumental song of the 80s.

It's mostly theme songs from TV shows and movies that come to mind when discussing instrumental songs from the 80s. In addition to ones already listed, let me just add the theme from the TV show "Airwolf" by Sylvester Levay as an honourable mention.

Certainly not the best instrumental of the times, but original nonetheless...

It actually dates from 1978, but it charted in 1980...so there!

Quite ahead of its time too, as a prototype piece of 'chillout' music!
