Subject: What Mall Stores do you remember (besides "Chess King")?

Written By: Todd Cannon on 11/16/05 at 6:54 pm

I'm trying to put together a list of 80's mall stores.  Any kind of stores... so long as they were in malls, and aren't so popular anymore.

Think "Chess King", "Merry Go Round", "Record World", "Wicks n' Sticks", etc.

I can use ALL the help I can get.  Any ideas???

Thanks!

Camelot Records (records, cassettes, sheet music)
The Weathervane (women's clothing)
Orange Julius (food...I used to love their pizza and, of course, the classic Orange Julius drink!)
Time Out (arcade)

I remember Orange Julius ( I love them!!), and definately Spencer's-that was the one place we always went to.

Deb and Lerner is where we went for clothes.

There was a Mister Pizza ....a pizza place at the mall near me...don't know if it was a chain, but we all loved their pizza, and there was a place called maybe: The Potato Sack ....they had the best french fries, they were like boardwalk fries, and you could get all kinds of topppings, from different flavors of cheese to sour cream and onion...they were yummy!

I always remember hanging at the movies, we always went to a matinee when we went to the mall...I remember going to see Arthur with a bunch of my friends.  We hung at the arcade too and played pinball and videogames.

How about K.B. Toy and hobby? Theyre not here in Modesto anymore. The Tilt was an arcade from the 80's/early 90's, but they recently brought it back. Our mall used to have a Swiss Colony store that sold meat and cheese.

They were all about getting you to put together expensive gift packs of smoked meats, cheeses, jams, and other overpriced commestibles to send to your relatives.  Order it in June for xmas, that stuff never goes bad 'coz it was never good.  Feh!

I worked at Orange Julius - Solano Mall for a few months, late '86/early '87.  My best memory is hurrying to make more of the drinks just before closing as we were allowed, nay, encouraged to drink what was left-over...I'm getting a stomach ache just thinking about it...

Spencers - to spend quality time with rubber dog sh** and lava lamps...

Wicks 'N Sticks - always smelled nice.  Could almost smell it from the other end of the mall, but I preferred playing with rubber puke and whoopee cushions... :P

Orange Julius and Sbarros bring back memories! I actually thought the latter had really good pizza - very Italian-styled and thin crust.

There were clothing/fashion ones like Sunglass Hut.

KayBee Toys was another good one - alot of Nintendo games I still have were bought there. I still see those in malls today a little bit, and I get instantly reminded of that. ;)

Aladdin's Castle was an arcade in this area at least. Last one I know of closed back in '99 - I got a load of tokens last time I was there (still have 'em). I miss the old-school arcade games, especially the driving ones.

Sam Goody and Musicland are basically identical music places we bought alot of tapes at back in the day (well, my mom primarily did it from, say the 80's up to the early 90's. I did it myself from, say 1994-2000). Those are definitely dying a slow death. Normally I wouldn't care (I buy used and/or cheaper places anyway now), but it is a part of my childhood, so that's kinda saddening in its own way. :(

^ At least in the second half of the 90's, I could recreate my childhood of the 80's pretty easily! :)

I grew up in a really small town, I didn't go to an actual mall until I was in the 7th grade and I went with the Home Ec Club at Christmas on a bus to a mall.

We always shopped at the little stores in our town....I never knew if some of them were at chain...the one clothing store I loved was called: Artley's, and it had the cutest stuff.  We use to have Murphy's and G.C. Murphy's...I loved those stores, I loved when Murphy's use to have a restaurant in it, I loved their french fries.

We had plazas....we had The Country Garden six pack...that we went to on "Nacho Runs" on Friday and saturday nights, we did have a Mister Donut too- we use to go there after school and get 1 donut and hang out.

We went to Family Fun...which was an arcade and played Pac-Man all day long on Saturday afternoons, or we hung out at the Stop N Go and played Pac Man all day. Just about every store in town had a Pac-Man machine.

We had a T-shirt shop called Designs Alive, where you picked out your style of t-shirt, then you picked a picture off the rack, and they could press it on your shirt and put your name on the back, now that was cool....When I went to the Outerbanks over the summer, I found a t-shirt shop at the beach that was just like it...talk about a nostalgic moment. :\'(

Orange Julius is still around.  They've got one at the local mall here

Here's a few.  Think many of these might be Canadian, but not sure:

Salmagundi - They made soup and sandwiches
Atlantic / Atlantique - They sold TV's and Stereos
Discus - Record Store
Mmmarvelous Muffins - They still exist, but all of the ones in my area no longer do  :\'(  I used to go there every morning and get a Spinach and Cheese Croissant.  Boy were those things ever tasty

Haven't been to a mall in ages, but I do remember piano/organ stores were popular in the 80's. You couldn't hardly walk into a mall that didn't sound like a karaoke machine. Every time I'd hear a piano or organ I immediately thought of Edith Prickley from SCTV.
Was "Service Merchandise" really "Best" with a different name?
I don't think so. Best was associated with La'Belles. Service Merchandise is still alive on the internet.
I usually went to the mall to buy books, so I remember Walden Books the most, which are still around.

I've lived in Brooklyn a couple years, and one day was driving down the street and saw the original Mama Sbarro's, which is out of business.  There's a sign there that says, "Please check out Sbarro's in the malls..." etc.  It's not on 86th Street, but it's near there...forget what street, though...

Montgomery Ward was in our mall until it left and K-Mart took it's place.

Soundwaves record stores

We had a chinese food place called Panda Express (I think)

McCrory Five and Dime (kinda like a Woolworth type store)

There were like 2 piano sellers in our mall, and 4 jewellry stores.

There was a store that strictly sold womens' clothes sizes 5, 7, 9 called (you guessed it) 5-7-9

We had a Gap, a JCPenney, a Sears.

Gosh I'm surprised that I can't remember the stores since going there was like, THE only thing to do during my teen years.

Wow so many stores have come and gone. I've worked in the local mall for 26 years now and have seen a ton of changes.  I remember stores like Toys and Wheels, Tops in Toys, Wizards Castle arcades, Woodwards, Eatons. Woolco, lots of different bookstores and record stores. Back in the day when you had to choose between record, 8 track, cassette and then cd.

Funnily enough, that was my first exposure to Chinese food though, and I really liked it.  Of course, now, more "genuine" places are preferred, but since mom never had even heard of an eggroll, it was a remedial start.

I ate at a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour once when I went to visit my friend (who had moved away to Alexandria, Virginia) in 1988.  It was my birthhday and they told the staff who rang this fire truck siren when they brought out my ice cream.  I must have turned about 30 shades of red because of all the unwanted attention.  :-[ ;D

Hey everyone! I'm from Warren, RI and the nearest mall to me is the Swansea Mall in Mass..,
      I remember stores like:

      Jordan Marsh..
      Tom McCann..
      Strawberries records and tapes..
      BeDazzled..
And we had this one store called Spin-and-Wear where you could either buy an item or spin something you already had.
They would put it on a form and have you drizzle latex paint over it,(you design it your way) then they would spin it and bake it to harden the paint and then it was done (does this sound familiar?)

We still have an Orange Julius, Maurices, Claires Boutique, and a Spencers gifts in our mall!

We lost Kaybee toys, Osco Drug, B Dalton, Waldenbooks, musicland, and  Montgomery wards

Thanks!

-Dominion grocery store (I think there might still be a few in Toronto)
-Kiddie Cobbler
-Panda Shoes (I liked going in there because they had this loft to try on shoes)
-MmmmMuffin (last time I saw one was in '96. They were really good)

Also.......

Toy City which was taken over by Toys "R" Us
Simpsons Limited: Which was taken over by Eatons.  The Bay street locale was where the TVOntario show Today's Special was filmed.
Foot Locker: I'm not quite sure what exactly happened to that?
Knob Hill Farm: My gran shopped at the one in Oshawa.  It closed because Steve Servo who owned the chain decided to close up shop because he didn't believe in technology.  It was heart wrenching to hear that so many of Mr Servo's employees were laid off.  :(

I remember Towers.  A wee bit o' trivia:  In the episode of Degrassi Junior High where Lucy is caught shoplifting, she is in a Towers store.

I remember Simpsons quite well.  By 1989, most Simpsons stores had converted to The Bay stores, especially the one that was used on the TV series Today's Special that is located in Toronto on Bloor St.

Consumers Distributing wasn't a mall store, but I do remember it.  It was catalog shopping, and all the merchandise was kept in the warehouse.  You picked out what you wanted, wrote it on the slip, and the person would go back into the warehouse to bring the item out.  My folks hated shopping there because you never knew if the item that was brought out was dropped or not.  But they had such good prices, we always shopped there regardless.

Actually some of the shopping malls did have Consumers Distributing, and I think they even had some merchandise in the back. When I was 12, from what I remember, I ordered my bike there in our local shopping centre (ok, it was a mini-mall), and I think we picked it up on the same day.

There was a Consumers in a mall in Toronto at Kennedy/Sheppard (Agincourt mall?) during the 80s and maybe even to the early 1990s. And they did have a  selection of merchandise within the store in the back, but mostly (like Whistledog wrote) it was catalog shopping.

That was at the Riverdale store which was at the bottom of Pape Street.  I think there was a Food City there too.  Both were owned by Oshawa Food LTD.
There was a Consumer's Distributing at the mall where I am but then the entire company went belly up.  I think there was one at the Duff too.  :(

There was one at the Cumberland Terrace in Toronto.  The company must have gone bankrupt because I remember that particular store was were my mom got her arts and crafts supplies.

Sam The Record Man was another mall based store too with heaquarters on Younge Street just south of Bloor Street.  Sam Snyderman retired a few years ago and died just last year.  It was the end of an era.  :(

http://torontoist.com/attachments/toronto_jamieb/20100807aagccc.jpg

And then A&A Records and Tapes that went bankrupt sometime in the early 90s.  :( Headquartered right next to Sam The Record Man.  I don't remember who owned that but they obviously knew nothing about running a business if they went bankrupt.  I guess they refused to modernize their stores and that's why they went under.

At the Methuen Mall we had Midland Records and Record Town.  Midland Records was a little bit hipper.  In other words, the clerk had heard of New Order, even if they didn't have the New Order record I was looking for.  These sufficed so long as my tastes were Top 40.  After that I had to go into the city to find my tunes.

They also had a streusel -- German pastry -- shop, which I'm sure was a chain.  I wonder if anybody remembers such a place.

I went to Sam's and A&A's often in the 1970s and 1980s. Boxing day sales to buy albums. Waiting for the day a specific '45 was released. Those were the days. I went to Sam's & A&A's the day after John Lennon was killed in 1980. His "Double Fantasy" album was selling like hot cakes.
Also went to "Zounds" in Scarborough to buy records.

We didn't have Sam's.  We had Sam Goody's, Coconuts, and Strawberries.  All of those are long gone.  I remember when Tower went under.  I did pick up a bunch of CDs for cheap, but I thought it was sad the chain was dying out.  I used to be able to get all kinds of classical composers at Tower in Boston.  Orland Jacinto Garcia, Jerry Hunt, Jin Hi Kim, Gordon Mumma, Pauline Oliveros just to name a few.  You can easily find all those composers online now, but it was great having at least ONE record store that sold esoteric contemporary music!

There used to be a record store in the local mall here called Discus.  I don't know if it was a chain or not, but I can't ever remember going in there.  I wish it was still around.  I'd probably be in there once a week.

Nowadays, the two major CD stores in Canada are Sunrise Records and HMV

I remember the one is Belleville had a very limited selected of rock-metal related stuff back in 08.

Does the IT store still exist in downtown toronto? I remember they used to sell obscure figures, lava lamps, masks and pop culture shirts in the 1990s and then they stopped selling such items later on if I can recall.

There used to be A lot of trading card and comic books stores in toronto in the 90s during the collectors craze. I remember the fairview mall having a number of trading card stands with every series you can imagine. They were always overpriced though.

Not the 80's, but very early 90's

The Cape Cod Mall was a whole lot different then. I remember a Benetton Store, Ames, and something else. Across the street, there was the KMart that's still there as well as the good 'ol IHOP. I remember being in the KMart on the way to go to Wakefield to visit my grandfather (My mom and I flew to Hyannis to meet my father who took the 6:45 AM boat out of Nantucket.) We went to the McDonalds that's still there on Route 132 in Hyannis.

The good old days nearly a 1/4 century ago.

Wow, I had forgotten about those logos! Thanks for the memories!

Other Canadian stores that I remember from the '80s:

-Toy World (was the toy store before Toys R Us took over)
-Dominion grocery store (I think there might still be a few in Toronto)
-Kiddie Cobbler
-Panda Shoes (I liked going in there because they had this loft to try on shoes)
-MmmmMuffin (last time I saw one was in '96. They were really good)

"In November 2009, Bruegger’s Enterprises Inc. acquired the restaurant holdings of Timothy’s Coffees of the World, Inc. ® , a wholesale coffee distribution company serving Canada and the U.S. and encompassing three restaurant brands including Timothy’s World Coffee, mmmuffins and Michél’s Baguette.

In 2010, Bruegger’s began offering their famous kettle-boiled bagels at three mmmuffins co-branded locations in the Greater Toronto Area–Exchange Tower, Hillcrest Mall and Union Station.

"Threecaf Brands Canada: Expanding Canada’s bakery-café market: June 2010

As you might guess from the name, Threecaf Brands Canada is a company that owns three café-style franchises: Timothy’s World Coffee, mmmuffins and Michel’s Bakery Café. These well-known brands are dispersed throughout the country and are recognised for their quality products, serving items like coffee, bagels, breads, specialty drinks, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts"

Because this website may last another 10 years, and the above-mentioned Threecaf company (which took over a few 80s/90s baked-goods businesses aimed at the southern Ontario office worker / mall shopper market) might not, I've taken the liberty of reproducing a few tidbits for posterity.  That's what happened to the mmmuffins, Timothy's Coffee, and Michel's Baguette chains.

I know that in the USA, A&W is still around, but here, it hasn't existed since around 2002.

All of this is great!  In the early 90's when malls were still a big thing I was young.  When the mid 90's rolled around I was only 10. So sadly, I never got to be a teenager during the awesome mall days. When I was a teen, 1998-2004, I was mostly withdrawn from anything social. When I did get some friends to hang with we mostly went to movies, and not at the mall.

I more so walked the mall with family as a youngster. While I'm not 100% positive if these stores were around in both the 90's and 80's I'll list the ones I remember. We have two indoor malls in my area. The one we frequented most is smaller. While the bigger one has two levels all around, the smaller just has this in the first few stores I mention. But I'm going to specifically talk about the small one since I remember it better.

These stores had an exit to the outside and a second story: Sears, JC Penny's and Dillard's

Montgomery Ward, Spencer's, Camelot, Radio Shack, Sun Coast, Waldon Books, Claire's and then there was this pet store. I don't remember the name.

Food Court: SBarro was a big thing with even bigger slices of pizza. The whole time the mall has been open there has been both a Greek and Chinese place.  Though different restaurants of the same cuizine took the spot. Dairy Queen and Orange Julious were and still are together. Then there is this popcorn place with multiple different kinds. We also have an Auntie Anne's. Taco Tico had its own little spot in the mall. Not even close to the food court. I don't think its there anymore.

We also had an arcade. Now its been replaced with minature golf.  We have a carousal that's still there as far as I know. Real people would pose as manaquins. The theater is still there. We've always had plenty of salons in there as well as those middle shops. Ray Ban etc. Only now its annoying sales people with their lotions and cell phones.

Over the years we have had several
different clothing stores. I know we have a Deb and 579 still exists in ours.  But those were not there in my childhood. I can remember several from the late 90's through now but not back then.

One store we do have now that we might have had back then was Dick's. They have another door to the outside. I could list several other stores but they would be from the 2000's or later so lol

There used to be one I would go to as a kid. I think they recently brought it back, but I'm sure it's way different now.

The same thing happened with Carl's Jr.  It also stopped operating in the Philippines in the early '00s. In my case, I remember both A&W and Carl's Jr. from my early childhood of 1998-2001.
