Subject: Call me--Telephone-related songs of the 1980s
Written By: MaxwellSmart on 10/24/05 at 10:40 pm
No poll, just list 'em. They can mention the telephone in the title or be about talking on the phone. Only stipulation, the subject of the song must be phone-related, it can't be just a passing reference in the lyrics. I'll just list a few so as not to hog all the titles
Blondie ~ Call Me
Go West ~ Call Me
Pete Shelley ~ Telephone Operator
Sheena Easton ~ Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)
Beastie Boys ~ Cookie Puss
Yazoo ~ Bad Connection

Operator (that's not the way it feels) - Jim Croce
Don't Call Us We'll Call You - Sugarloaf
Talk Dirty To Me - Poison
and Aldo Nova's version of Coney Hatch's "Hey Operator"

"London Calling" was an album by The Clash. It featured a song of the same title.
The album was released in December 1979 in UK, and in January 1980 in US. People might argue that this makes it a 1970s song, but I'm not in the mood to argue. ;)

Well done, KM. How could I have forgotten that one? It's only just over a month since I saw Squeeze!
Because of that song it is no longer allowed for a song to contain a telephone number (in the USA at least) because so many Squeeze fans were pestering people who had that number. At least that's what it says in my book about Squeeze. Must dig it out and remind myself what it's called. I think it's Squeeze song by song.

Meri Wilson (15 June 1949 - 28 December 2002) was an American popular music singer, specializing in double entendre novelty songs.
She was born in Nagoya, Japan, at a U.S. military base, but raised in Marietta, Georgia. Wilson later gained a Masters Degree in Musical Education at Georgia State University.
In the 1970s she moved to Dallas, Texas and worked as a singer and model. She achieved sudden fame in the summer of 1977 after she recorded a song titled "Telephone Man", which was filled with suggestive lyrics and her breathy squealing voice. The song became a surprise hit single,

The Fixx: Sign of Fire
Heart of stone, I tried to reach you Of the altar stone, I tried to warn you But you were not alone you wouldn't take the call You wear brimstone I tried to warm you
Always the same desire
After the tone they try to storm you You are a voice alone and who dares to question Forgotten at home how do you live with Do you wear brimstone give me the call
Always the sign is fire I'm being drawn by the heat Always the same desire, hot
Through the telephone I tried to reach you But if you're not alone I know your life is torn I see your lover's tomb why don't you mention To me whenever I call I'll try to warm you
Always the sign is fire I'm being drawn by the heat Always the same desire
You're not alone, always the sign is fire Heart of stone, always the sign is fire You're not alone, always the sign is fire Heart of stone, always the sign is fire
You're not alone, always the sign is fire Heart of stone, always the sign is fire
