Subject: Favorite 80s R&B/dance songs
Written By: Carl on 10/13/05 at 10:12 am
I think a lot of the songs were okay for this era
I think Jeffrey Osborne's 'Stay With Me Tonight' was great! I hear that on the radio very often, and love listening to it.
Sylvester, who was big in the 70s, had a good hit around '82 with 'Do you wanna funk' it'is a fun tune.
LOVE Club Noveu's version of 'Lean On Me'

What about "Night and Day" by Al B. Sure?
"I Want To Be Your Man" by Roger
Would these count as R&B?

I'm sorry, but the phenomena known as R&B did not exist during the 80's - period.
There was Disco, Rap and Funk....but no R&B. Anyone who fancies trying to persuade me otherwise has really got one hell of a mountain to climb! ;)
Sigh. If only we could return to those days.... :-\\

"Let The Music play" - Shannon
That's a great song in any decade! You can still get your groove on to that one! That percussion mix was untoppable!
Of course, I like Rick James, "Superfreak," heh heh!
;)
State of the Nation - Industry
Don't get me wrong, it's one of my faves, too; it features one of my all-time favorite synth riffs. But it wasn't noooo R&B. It was lily-white candy-azz synth-pop!
BTW, almost everything called R&B in the last 25 years has nothing to do with rock 'n' roll's older cousin, "rhythm and blues." I don't know how cheesy funk and slow jams got misnomered R&B, but they did!

I wouldn't class it as R&B either, but It does qualify as a dance tune though. From what I remember though, I believe it made a minor impact on the R&B charts. Back then, it seemed like alot of non-R&B songs were becoming hits on the R&B charts. If I remember, even Hall and Oates had a bunch of R&B hits (they sooo aren't R&B) ::)

Not surprising Industry's "State of the Nation" made it onto the R&B charts. There was a lot more room for white pop acts back then. Heck, a lot of people thought Yazoo (U.S. "Yaz") was a Black act back in 1982! Their singles made pretty big splash on the R&B/dance charts.

like Chasey said, not sure, what exactly is R & B? I'd classify these more as Pop Music....
CUPID/I'VE LOVED YOU FOR A LONG TIME....Spinners (I had my own dance routine to this one)
CELEBRATION & LADIES NIGHT...Kool & the gang (still favorite family wedding dance tunes)
FLASHDANCE...Irene Cara
ROCK WITH YOU & BEAT IT...Michael Jackson
PUMP UP THE VOLUME...Marrs
TAKE YOUR TIME (DO IT RIGHT)...SOS Band
YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE...Phil Collins (guess the original was classified as "SOUL", not R & B)
FUNKYTOWN...Lipps (but I guess that's FUNK)
IT TAKES TWO...Rob Base & DJ(???)
a lot of Donna Summer & MC Hammer
BETTER LOVE NEXT TIME..Dr Hook
and the list goes on....
