Subject: Country Music in the 80's?

Written By: whistledog on 09/14/05 at 10:23 pm

I couldn't find a thread on 80's country music, so I thought I'd make one :)

I wasn't (and still am not) much of a fan of country music, but in the 80's, there were a few popular ones that I really liked:

I Love A Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbitt
Drivin' My Life Away - Eddie Rabbitt
You and I - Eddie Rabbitt wth Crystal Gayle
Baby I Lied - Deborah Allen
Bop - Dan Seals
Blessed Are the Believers - Anne Murray
Nobody - Sylvia

I'm in the same boat as you - "traditional" (pickup truck-ish) country music drives me bonkers, but some of the more pop oriented songs are cool.

Interestingly enough, I think the early 80's almost rivalled the (roughly) 1997-2001 era of Faith Hill/Shania Twain/Leann Rimes-esque pop/country crossover.

Many of the songs you mentioned bring that to mind. Many pop songs had a slight influnce of it too, such as "65 Love Affair" from Paul Davis, latter day Doobie Brothers, etc.

I also like Juiuce Newton's few hits from then.

My favorite 80's band of the genre is probably Restless Heart - another crossover. Ballads like "I'll Still be Loving You" to midtempo rock songs like "Wrong or Right" and "That Rock Won't Roll" mixed with more typical country fare, like "Wheels" made for a great sound.

In the 90's they got a new lead singer and had their true crossover success with the two semi ballads "Tell Me What You Dream" and "When She Cries".

Did you know that Lionel Richie had a hit single in 1984, Stuck on You, that hit No 1 on the Pop, R&B, and Country Charts?  He also wrote Lady, a big hit for Kenny Rogers, and did a duet with Alabama called Deep River Woman.

I like listening to country music sometimes.  The Urban Cowboy soundtrack has some great songs on it.

I think country music was awesome in the late 80's through mid-90's. It gets worse every year, since the late 90's.

With the exception of Still the One (Which is a 70's song), all of those surely do count as 80's Country hits :)

Alabama has to be the most remembered band for me.  I remember being at the junoir high dance and "The closer you get" came on.  I was raised on country actually and blue grass so when I started listening to heavy metel (my friend introduced me to that)  I was aprehensive.  I loved John Denver, Eddied Rabbit, and Crstal Gale to mention a few.  I don't think you can mention 80's country without mentioning the song "Looking for Love" from Urban Cowboy. Oh, before Olivia made it big in pop, she was singing country.

I don't really like 80s country that good.  There were some bright spots like Alabama and Crystal Gale mentioned above, but I prefer the more traditional sounds.

I like some of Dolly Parton's early-80s stuff.  9 to 5, Islands in the Stream w/Kenny Rogers, Old Flames, etc.

But in general, I'm not a fan of pop/country crossovers.  I like both genres individually, but when they meet it just seems like a giant commercial stunt.  Can't stand Faith Hill and the other late-90s country artists that tried to "make the jump".

:D

Even though I usually don't like country-there are some that I like. I do like Kenny Rogers-but he was more of a crossover. I especially love "Don't Fall in Love with a Dream"-a duet with Kim Carnes. I also like Lady, The Gambler and many others of his. Another country song that I love (and I know everyone is going to jump on me for this) is "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene. (Ok, I'm going to run for cover now.)

I am one of those "cross-over" listeners.  I listen to all kinds of music. My dad's fault - he listened to rock-n-roll, top 40 and country.  In the '80's I loved Alabama.  I saw them in concert several times and even got Randy Ownes autograph at one concert. Woo Hoo.  :)

At the time I would've only liked Dolly.

However this past year I was introduced to the delights of Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England" from 1985.

I also like Crystal Gayle's "If You Ever Change Your Mind" from 1980. Here's an amazing duet / medley she did at the time with Andy Gibb. He really adds a new dimension to each song.
