Anyway, I always thought it was a promotion for Jack in the Box, but my boyfriend remembers it differently (and he's proabably very right as he was much older than I at the time). Jack In The Box would make sense... because I was in New York during the first half of the 1980's and I don't recall ever seeing this commercial...  so it was probably for something that they don't have in NY if it was during that time... and Jack in The Box would qualify. :)

Thanks for the response :0) I always thought it would makes sense for it to be Jack in the Box, but my boyfriend thought it was some other fastfood chain, like McDonalds or Burger King (and he could be very well right).

We definitely had McD's and Burger King in New York.. and I can remember their commercials... although McDonalds DID have a commercial with a moon singing "Mac Tonight" to the tune of "Mack The Knife"

That is the famous "Mac Tonight" series of commercials for McDonalds.

The series ran from around 1984 until around 1991.  With the "Jack" reference, I would guess that it was a regional commercial, and probably only aired in regions where there was Jack In The Box was the competition.  But the Singing Moon with shades is "Mac Tonight", no doubt about it.

These commercials ran several different songs, but the main theme for most of them was "Mack The Knife".

There was also a Volkswagen GTI commercial from 1986 that used "Hit The Road Jack" (sung by Ray Charles), but the video does not feature anything that you mentioned, other then the song.

I think I stand corrected, Mushroom. The link you posted shows the image of the moon guy just the way I remembered him. I could be mistaken with the song, so maybe I got it confused with "Mack the Knife" For all I know, remembering this could be one of my earliest memories, as I could only have been 2 or 3 (or maybe four, if they ran into late 1985/early 1986).
