Subject: Remember these TV shows?

Written By: ARD on 08/12/05 at 9:38 pm

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone else remembered some TV shows (and yes, I'd be interested in getting hold of some DVDs or VHS):

"Down To Earth" - About a woman named Ethel who was run down by a trolley in the 1920s, then came back to Earth as an angel in the 1980s to help a guy take care of his 3 kids.  Ethel was a maid.

"Rocky Road" (???) - Can't remember much, but I do recall it was set in an ice cream shop, and I think it was on the beach (also aired on TBS).

Third and last was a cartoon, possibly Japanimation, about some superheroes tooling around in a spaceship called the Phoenix (they were all dressed as bird-like creatures)

Please help me...I'm not nuts, am I?

The third show you are thinking of was called Battle of the Planets.

I liked Riptide more than I liked Small Wonder.

What about Jake and The Fatman?

If I recall, Small Wonder was about that robotic girl? Or am I thinking of something else?

How many people remember the short-lived 1985 sci-fi/fantasy series (on CBS, stupid CBS  >:(), "Otherworld" about the Sterling family that finds itself falling into a pit at an Egyptian pyramid and going to another dimension of Earth to an Earth ruled by heavy handed aristocracy?

I loved that show, too bad CBS didn't have much faith in it.  I also loved that one of the stars was Tony O'Dell shortly before he was to show up on ABC's "Head Of The Class".

Of course this could be one of the shows that is precursor of the 1990's sci-fi series, "Sliders"?  ;)

I was probably too young to get the concept of the show, but it came off kind of odd - yet I still watched it. As we all remember, cable TV was still limited back in the 80's (from what I remmeber, it seemed the most channels we had were about 20-30; and 2 out of 3 TV's in our house didn't have a cable box, so we were stuck with the original "13" channels - lol), so if there wasn't anything else on, you just watched what seemed the most appealing, lol.

Now, Punky Brewster I LOVED! I long to watch episodes of it again - but I'm too tight to buy the DVD's... Maybe I can find those at the rental store..

There are 2 Sci-Fi shows in the 80's that I absolutely loved, and was sad when they were taken off the air.

"Hard Times On Planet Earth", where an intergalactic criminal was sentenced to a unique form of incarceration.  He is to roam around Earth until he learns compassion.

"War Of The Worlds", which in many ways can be considered a fore-runner of "X-Files".  The main cast is part of a Government operation, which had been trying for decades to deny an alien invasion in the 1930's.  Orson Wells' radio play was really a cover-up of the invasion.  In the series, the second wave of invasion has started to arrive, and they are working to free the aliens captured in the first wave decades earlier.

WOTW really did have a unique ensamble cast.  The Colonel in charge of the operation was an American Indian.  The lead scientist was a black paraplegic.  Those helped make this series stand out in it's time.  Sadly, it was a syndicated show that never got the attention it deserved, so it vanished after only 2 seasons.

Another honerable mention for me is "Beauty And The Beast".  An excellent show, but the network had no idea what to do with it.  Constant shuffling of the schedule made it hard to find, and then in the 3rd season they killed off one of the main characters.
