Subject: Classic theme tunes

Written By: robby76 on 07/29/05 at 11:09 am

I know it's a well known fact but my God 80's theme tunes were soo cool and catchy! They really made you want to watch what was coming up... look at Thundercats... really gets the adrenalin going. It actually makes you wanna stick around and see what the commotion's all about.

And sitcom songs like Family Ties... they could've been hit songs for how well they were written and composed. So much thought and talent went into them. Go to sitcoms online and download the season 3 opening theme credits to see what I mean... Sha la la la!!! Ha ha!

Shows today have zero theme tunes that appeal.

I've always liked the 80's themes to Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy when they came out, I always found them to be very catchy.

Baby, if you've ever wondered,
Wondered whatever became of me,
I'm living on the air in Cincinnati,
Cincinnati, WKRP.
Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,
Town to town and up and down the dial
Maybe you and me were never meant to be,
But baby think of me once in awhile.
I'm at WKRP in Cincinnati..

I found this nifty-neat site.

Despite being a fan, I have no recollection of the Wheel of Fortune theme! I'm more of a sitcom guy. Will have to do some surfing to find it.

The TV theme song, from the 1980's, that should have been a huge hit (but only went to I do believe in early 1983 to #82 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts) was the theme to "Cheers", "Where Everybody Knows Your Name".  This was done by Gary Portnoy and I do have on CD and did have a 45 rpm of it (I might still have the 45 rpm).  What I loved about this theme was the extra words that Portnoy had in the song (not usually heard on "Cheers" opening and only heard I do believe twice during the run of the show, 1982 - 1993).

To me "Cheers" was the ultimate TV show about the 1980's and the theme, at least to me, expressed a lot of how I felt about the 1980's and even some of the 1990's.  8)

Of course that's my two cents about this subject.

"Where Everybody Knows Your Name" was done by Gary Portnoy

Gary also did the theme tune for Punky Brewster!

One other theme song I always loved from the 1980's was the theme from the miniseries "V" & "V:  The Final Battle".  I remember when I first watched both miniseries just thinking how spooky the theme was and fit with the invasion of the lizard people aliens theme.

Full House was good the first time, but it got old... fast.

One that wasn't really cool, but got stuck in your head was "Strawberry Shortcake"

Among game show themes, I like the $25,000 Pyramid theme song - they had one version they used on the 70's versions of that show, then they updated it when they brought it to CBS in 1982.  8)

Nobody mentioned Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da from Life Goes on. Maybe ithe show started its run too late...think it started in 88 or 89? Can't remember but I used to like it and the theme song.
