Subject: Favorite 80s "album tracks"?

Written By: Marty McFly on 07/08/05 at 3:56 pm

Oftentimes, songs which never were released as singles are just as good as (if not, at times, even BETTER than) the hits. Especially in the '80s when there were lots of "classic" albums that tended to be good all the way through.

To my knowledge none of the following songs were hit singles - here's just a few favorites:

Queen of the Masquerade Ball - Peter Cetera
Vanz Kant Danz - John Fogerty
Head Above Water - Hall and Oates
pretty much any Weird Al (the majority of his songs weren't "hits" anyway)
One Or the Other - Paula Abdul
I Can't Hold Back - Eddie Money
Zombie Zoo - Tom Petty
Burning Up - Madonna
She's Only Happy When She's Dancin' - Bryan Adams
The Only One - Lionel Richie
Wild in the Streets - Bon Jovi
On the Day - Jackson Browne
Bad for You - Rod Stewart
D.M.S.R. - Prince
No Surrender - Bruce Springsteen
I Can See It in Your Eyes - Men At Work
Popular Girl - Survivor
Satisfaction - Laura Branigan
I Don't Wanna Know - Phil Collins
Magic Touch - Aerosmith
Time for Change - Motley Crue
You Wouldn't Know Love - Michael Bolton

That's What Friends Are For - Rod Stewart/Burt Bacharach (1982)
Bacharach originally wrote it for the film 'Night Shift' to which he also performed an instrumental version

Sussudio - Big Daddy (1985)
They performed 80s hits in a 50s style.  I listened to this one in particular a number of time before I even realized it was a Phil Collins cover

Romantic Dreams - Industry (1983)

Hold Back the Rain - Duran Duran (1982)

The Chauffer - Duran Duran (1982)
Liked this one before I saw the video lol

Shadows on Your Side - Duran Duran (1983)

A Ray of Sunshine - Wham! (1983)
Love Machine - Wham! (1983)
Nothing Looks the Same in the Light - Wham! (1983)
Come On - Wham! (1983)
Technically though, several of these appeared on 'Club Fantastic Megamix', but on their own, none of them were singles

Jewel - Propaganda (1985)
It's sort of a remix of 'Duel'.  The version on the 'Wishful Thinking' remix album is fab

Are You Ready? - KC (1983)
Appears on his 1983 solo album KC Ten

Under the Moonlight - Blvd (1988)

Burning Up - Madonna

Burning Up was a single, twice in fact.

Madonna first released the orginal rock version of the song as a single in 1981 with her band, "Emmy".  It got a little airplay around New York, but that was it.  (A shame too, I like the rock version better - you can find it on some of the bootleg sites around)

In 1983 Madonna, now solo, re-released with it with a more pop/dance sound.  It did considerably well on the charts considering she wasn't well know yet, and of course it was on her first album "Madonna".  Music video here - http://youtube.com/watch?v=EX2I0PtZMl4

That said, there is one gem from Madonna's first album that wasn't a single - Physical Attraction.   8)
