I've gone for Gloria Estefan (back then "only" lead singer to MSM), Kim Wilde, Kylie Minogue (still like her) and Mel (sadly departed) & Kim. All the others - not bad, but no big fan either.

Lulu? She was a 60's singer. I don't recall her making a hit in the 80's apart from the remix of "Shout" in 1986, but that doesn't count.

I went for Mel & Kim, Madonna (i hate voting for the favourite, but she was the biz in the 80's), Gloria Estefan and 3 others. Whitney Houston was a definitive 80's chick too... her first two albums are her best ever, but sadly not included.

I actually wouldn't class Lulu as an 80's act... a 90's one yes, cos she had a big comeback (in the UK though). To be legible on a poll like this, you should of at least had 3 Top 40 singles in my opinion.

Definitely Laura Branigan. There are others in the list that I like, but no firm second choice.

Do acts have to be exclusively female to qualify? My second favourite female singer is Marie Fredrikson from Roxette, who were definitely around in the 80s. Are they not eligible because the other 50% of the group was male?

WOW I can't believe no one mentioned HEART! They ruled the charts in the late 70's all through the 80's and the tip of the 90's. I mean come on people. Ann Wilson’s voice blows almost all of those women out of the water. I agreed on most of the list and it was an awesome decade for women in music. If I am wrong and someone did mention them I didn't see it and I thought I read them all.LOL
Long story short, women rock no matter what decade!

My 5:

1. Madonna: Even though there were some talented females in the early '80s, Madonna is really what made the decade a big one for women (especially late 1985+) Her recent material isn't my cup of tea, but that MTV magic was revolutionary at the time.
2. Whitney Houston- Listening to her latest "I Look To You" album followed byt listening to her first two makes you wonder, "What happened to her voice?" I've read that   her vocal ability was purely based on her mother and did not have an actual vocal coach! But back then she was everywhere and Whitney for several years even became a popular baby name.
3. Diana Ross- This only includes her '80s era and really started strong and popular until the MTV divas took over the charts. (Though her Eaten Alive and Red Hot Rhythm and Blues albums are a bit underrated).
4. Eurythmics (Why aren't they on the list?)- A cross of blue-eyed soul and new wave along with Annie Lennox's clear voice easily makes this one of the most enjoyable artists whose music rarely grows old.
5. Pat Benatar- The first female MTV artist; continues to tour and get praise, you can't go wrong here (even if she doesn't quite get the credibility she deserves).

One notable omission is Janet Jackson (by far the biggest female star of the '80s to miss the list). Her Control and Rhythm Nation albums are classics now, and really made her own persona rather than being in this shadow of her late brother.


I've pretty much come to the point now where ALL '80s artists are "oldies" to the Top 40 crowd; US radio isn't playing the latest Madonna/Whitney Houston songs on the mainstream radio, even if they are big hits in Europe.

1986 and 1987 were the biggest years of the '80s for women in music, with 13 #1 hits by female singes, groups, or duets in '86 and 14 in '87.
