What are your fave songs from '84? Here's just a few I like:

Cool it Now - New Edition
Stuck On You - Lionel Richie
Runaway - Bon Jovi

That's just a few to start with - I'm sure I'll think of more later. :)

Believe it or not, "The Reflex" was also the first Duran Duran song to be #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (US) Charts.

"99 Red Balloons" is the English version for "99 Luftballon", if you didn't know.
I don't know why there are people who actually didn't know Nena recorded this song in English when I actually grew up on this one.
Also, there are some songs that were promo singles before 1984 such as Culture Club's "Time". This song's from the album "Kissing To Be Clever" (1982) but I guess it became famous in the USA a year later.
The same thing happened to "Karma Chameleon": This song was originally released in 1983 but it came to be known in the USA in 1984.
Another 1984's good songs are A-Ha's "Take On Me", Laura Branigan's "Self-Control", Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go - Go", Katrina And The Waves' "Walking On Sunshine", Berlin's "No More Words" among others.

I'm not really sure you can call "99 Red Balloons" the english version, since the two sets of lyrics have absolutely nothing in common, but I guess you'll have to understand german to hear that, I just think that "99 Luftballon" is the best version and many people don't seem to realize that it's two different songs.

If I remember rightly, the group had to record it in English as British record buyers were (at the time) pretty loathe to buy anything not sung in the native tongue - a lot of European records went via this route, 'Dolce Vita' and 'Words' (both '83) being a couple of examples...
But the music (and tabloid) press were more interested in what was growing in Nena's armpit more than anything else...!

The Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" has to be the best song ever from 1984. There's no question of it being rubbish. No one can put any other song in it's place.
