1987 was a REALLY good year in music - one of the best. Sooo many songs to choose.
One interesting fact: Some week in 1987 the first seven places of billboard album list were "hair metal/Rock" groups!
Now that's almost similar in today's chart but replace the hair metal with hip hop. :\'(

I picked the Crowded House, Motley Crue, Poison, and Lisa Lisa songs, though I love most of the songs on this list.
Another song I like from that year that's not on the list is a forgotten hair band classic: 'Nobody's Fool' by Cinderella

That's a good list for 1987. Out of all the songs in it I selected
The Pleasure Principle -- Janet Jackson
Lookin' for a New Love -- Jody Watley
It's the End of the World as We Know It -- R.E.M.
True Faith -- New Order
Right On Track -- Breakfast Club
But these are also good 1987 songs (at least they were from 1987 where I live)
Don't Shed a Tear -- Paul Carrack
Why You Treat Me So Bad -- Club Nouveau (used in Luniz's "I Got Five on It" from 1995]
Don't Dream It's Over -- Crowded House
New Sensation -- INXS
Let's Wait Awhile -- Janet Jackson
New Day for You -- Basia
Livin' on a Prayer -- Bon Jovi
Something About You -- Level 42
Cherry Bomb -- John Cougar Mellencamp
Better Days -- Dianne Reeves
Tom's Diner -- Suzanne Vega
I Want To Be Your Man -- Roger
Breakout -- Swing Out Sister

Great list! Hair metal, pop/rock, dance, power ballads and a little classic rock thrown in. I think 1987 in general was a bit of a transitional year in music. Many of these songs still reflect the "fun and happy" feel of roughly 1983-86, but also stuff like "No Sleep till Brooklyn" and even U2 points toward some of what music in the early/mid 90's would sound like.
It was the last year of the "early MTV generation" in other words.
Oh yeah, my list:
Here I Go Again
Shake Your Love (why did I just admit that one? Well, other people did too, so I guess I'm okay! ;D )
Girls Girls Girls
Bad
Dude Looks like a Lady
Alone
Welcome to the Jungle
I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Don't Dream it's Over
Tell it to my Heart
Say You Will
Heaven is a Place on Earth
Land of Confusion
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Got My Mind Set on You
Never Gonna Give You Up
She's Like the Wind
Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now
OTHER...
You Are the Girl - Cars
Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi

I remember when I was little kid in the 80's and now I look back at a song from that time and just groove to its a little beat and every little word. That song would be "Rock Steady" by The Whispers. That is one of my favorite songs. That song just moves me every time I hear it. The words and The beat just moves you.

You mean "Rock... steady... steady rockin' all night long".
I LOVED that song too... in fact I remember telling my brother I "wrote" a new song and sang him the Rock Steady chorus... he was so impressed til he heard it playing in the mall... ha ha!

There's a lot of good songs and memories for me that year. Oddly though, the one that takes me back is Chicago's "If she would've been faithful". Don't ask me why considering that I was in the 5th Grade then.

Add "(Show me what) Should I See" by the Canadian band Frozen Ghost, a quintessential one-hit wonder (never heard from them again other than singer-songwriter Arnold Lanni producing OLP's "Clumsy").

"Girlfriend in a Coma" by the Smiths.
"The One I Love" by R.E.M.
"Luka" by Suzanne Vega

Frozen Ghost had many popular hits with songs like "Dream Come True", "End of the Line" and my all-time favourite, "Yum Bai Ya" :)
I had the FG album. I thought the power ballad "Promises" would be a top 5 smash, even though the chorus melody was bodily lifted from LZ's "All of my Love".
Incidentally, 38/m/Oklahoma City. You?

I was introduced to Frozen Ghost on the boards (never heard of them before) and I think they were great. 'Promises' is a brilliant track along with the song 'Step by step'.

Sure there's a lot of good music on that list, I missed some Roxette though, but I'm a bit confused about one of the entries; "Husker Du - Could You Be the One?" being danish and all, Husker Du means Do You Remember but I can't remember this band at all, so...?

I think those Crowded House songs were from 1986, but probably charted into 1987.
I chose 20, but here are my absolute faves:
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
Something So Strong - Crowded House
Heart and Soul - T'Pau
Bad - Michael Jackson
I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2

I put in the songs by Debbie, Tiffany, Belinda, R.E.M., Replacements, Husker Du, Depeche Mode, Smiths, IAS by Pet Shop Boys,
I would have put U Got The Look by Prince and Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles in there, so I picked "Other" as well.
This is my favorite year for music. Too bad I was only three or four then but pretty much all of my favorites artists now are represented.

Punk band from Minneapolis composed of Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton. Disbanded 1987. Had several solid albums. I'd say one of my favorite bands of the eighties.
