Subject: Anyone remembered seeing Oliver and Company when it originally came out in 1988?

Written By: J289 on 05/24/05 at 8:03 pm

Well i did, back when i was 6 years old living in Omaha Nebraska! it was in the winter of 1988,  My mom and dad took me to see this at a shopping mall theater, i loved it and i even saw it again after Christmas, i had some of the original merchandise like a read-along book with cassette, a plastic Oliver toy from Sears, Pajamas, a storybook and a coloring book.

I was disappointed that it never came on video until 1996 when it got re-issued in theaters, i was glad it came back and i did saw the re-issue as well, and i bought the video after 9 years of waiting, but now i replaced it with the DVD.

Brings back great memories! fun underrated disney flick with a great soundtrack and that Rita is sooo sexy, i think this movie was sooo successful back in 1988 after two flops " Great Mouse Detective" and " Black Cauldron" that it made a little peak to the Disney golden age.

I didn't see it when it originally came out, I did however see it on video, it's a overlooked Disney film.

^Yea...I think it has to be one of the most overlooked Disney animated movies (right along with the Black Cauldron and all those other late 70s and 80s ones)

It's amazing how different it is (animation wise) from the Little Mermaid, that came out the following year.  Disney really changed animation stlyes in between the two.

ahhh, I love Oliver & Company. I prefer it to Lady & the Tramp, it was a hip 1980s Disney movie...unlike The Little Mermaid (which I also love!) that's probably why it didn't get publicized much...

BTW, I was born the summer of '88, if anyone cares lol.

Yes I did!  In fact we lived in Southern California and one of the animators daughters was in my class, and her dad came to school at talked to us about animation.  He even drew Oliver and Dodger on the board in chalk!  Wow, what a great memory that is.  I miss those days...... :\'(

Right you are, DJ! Billy voiced the Jack Russett terrier named "Dodger", leader of the dog pack and wound up mentoring Oliver, who joined the gang despite being a kitten. I don't know if Billy wrote any songs, but he did sing the classic theme song, "Why Should I Worry?" And I still wanna know why it wasn't on his last "Greatest Hits" CD! I wonder if it's used in "Movin' Out", but probably not.

BTW, I saw the movie in the theater too, on New Year's Eve, 1988.

Your Pal,
Doc

Oliver and Company is a good flick.  I saw it when it first came out in theaters....
It's one of the Disney "80's misfit" flicks....along with The Black Cauldron,Great Mouse Detective, and The Fox and the Hound.

Known as The Disney Dark Age.....

But I enjoyed it

Yeah, I remember watching it in the theater with some friends back in January or February of 1989.  I remember we saw a couple kissing, and being 11-12 year-olds we were gawking at them and one of my friends even through a popcorn kernel at them.
