Subject: Just a thought.....
Written By: 80smuzikhead on 05/18/05 at 5:36 am
I love 80s music (well, duh!) as much as I did in the 80s. Perhaps I love it
even more now, cos it represents a childhood that I wasn't allowed
to have. But I have to wonder......
How does it feel for a star of the 80s, to have a fan say (in so
many words) "I really love that song/album/video you made 20 YEARS
AGO!"? How would I feel to have someone say to me, "I love that
painting you did at school, when you were 9 years old"? I think I'd
be embarrased! Then again, none of my primary school paintings have
sold millions of copies. :D

That's true! What about: "...I loved your presentation of JFK on 5th grade in 1987. It changed my life..." What would I think....gee, you must be joking, after all I was quite shy.

Well, I personally like when people congradulate something I did in the past (after all, it IS the same person!), but I see the other side too. You also want the "fans" to like what you're doing now.
If, say, Madonna were to only have people congradulate her on "Material Girl" and "Borderline" that would automatically lump her into that category forever, to a certain extent - and an artist needs to grow and change their sound at least a little (only a few bands, like AC/DC, can pull off coming out with roughtly the same album all the time).
Sooo, I guess what I'm tryin' to say is, the best compliment of all, would probably be you like their older work AS WELL AS their current work.

I was thinking more of those artists who haven't put anything out since the 80s and are making a crust out of "80s nostalgia" gigs. What you said is very true though. I remember a story told by my fave idol, Boy George: He made an appearance at some club and cracked the sh*ts when they played "Karma Chameleon" in his honour. He went on to play for the crowd, a track that he had just recorded, saying something along the lines of, "This is real music, for people who have found their G-spot!" ;)
