Vote here and also add a reason why one band was better than the other and why you liked them.

I can't stand Spandau Ballet's "True" song! I think it is one of the top 10 overplayed songs on the radio. I've heard this song played in every store, restaurant, mall, doctor's office for the past 20 years straight! Duran Duran was ahead of their time in the day, and no 80's music collection is complete without "Rio" They had talent, everything.

I can't add a reason why I like them because I couldn't stand either of them.

Duran Duran, mostly because I heard only one song from Spandau Ballet.

It depends - overall I like Duran Duran better (Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, Rio, A View to Kill, and even their 1993 'comeback' ballad hit "Ordinary World" are classics).

But I absolutely love SB's "True" - such a pretty new wave ballad. They were a one-hit wonder though -- at least I haven't heard any of their other songs or seen them listed on 80's compilations, etc.

I went for Duran Duran. Spandau Ballet are good but they are less accessible to me.  :)

Both are pretty good, but I'd have to go with Duran Duran.

Although I enjoyed Spandau Ballet, my vote definitely goes to D2. Their long string of impressive hits really defined 1980s New Wave and "Duranies" were everywhere!!! :)

I think Duran Duran was a better group, but I listened to Spandau Ballet more...more than a lot of bands in the era.

I voted for Duran Duran, although I would not say that they were "better" than Spandau Ballet.

They simply satisfy my ears in a better way. :)

I picked Spandau Ballet (weird name though). I have their "greatest hits" cd. I think their best songs came from period from 1983 to 1985, when they teamed up with these two producers (forgot their names) and gave Spandau the sound everyone knows. Their songs from before and after this time sounded different.

Grammatic error.  THE REFLEX.  Oh another favorite "Girls on Film"  then there's "A Veiw To A Kill" :)

I agree.  Of course, it depends on what you mean by New Wave.  I would classify Duran as New Wave, but I would also classify Talking Heads as New Wave.  Two very different sounds.

But was "The Reflex" about a similar subject matter?  Hmmmm.....

Well, you do need good reflexes to "Relax" ;D

Yes, it ws "Relax, don't do it," not "Reflex, don't do it."  After flexion cums relaxiation!

Are they about the same kind of thing:

So why don't you use it?
Try not to bruise it
Buy time don't lose it
The reflex is an only child he's waiting in the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark

I'm on a ride and I want to get off
But they won't slow down the roundabout
I sold the Renoir and the TV set
Don't want to be around when this gets out

I hope not.  Don't like the sound of that.  If I had to wager a guess, I'd say the song is about drug addiction, but DD often claimed their songs didn't really have a message, they just liked sticking words together to make catchy phrases.

Now some may say that proves DD is an inane pop group.  Not so fast.  Such a practice is often utilized by songwriters of all calibers.  For instance, I spent years trying to figure out the meaning behind Paul Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard."  I thought it had something to do with the Civil Rights movement.  My sister thought it had homoerotic overtones.  Later I read an interview with Simon (Paul, that is), in which he said of the song, "Oh, I don't really know what that was all about.  I just liked assembling the lyrics."
;D

They also had a great song in the 80's called  "Gold".

I cant pick overall.

I like each band as much as I dislike them.

I like Hungry like the wolf as much as I like True..........so its a stalemate to me.

Actually both...babeee.

True  is THE MOST DREAMY song from the 80's. It STILL puts me into Never, never land.  I absolutely almost DIE whenever that song comes on..."Ah, ah, ah...ah......ah, ah, ah....ah..." Most especially when Adam Sandler chose to include it in his 80's reminiscent film b]The Wedding Singer That song just makes my heart melt.... I'll grab ANY male partner around just to dance to it's soulful dreaminess

Duran Duran.....what else can one say????  They were THE BIG icon of the eighties Pop band's.  Especially their top grammy winner "The Reflex".

"Na, na, na (The Reflex) na, na, na, na (The Reflex) Na, na, na, na (The Reflex)  Flex, flex, flex, flex, flex....You've gone too far this time.....But I'm dancing on the danger line....."

I think this pretty much says it all.  Duran2 ROCKED.    8) 8) 8)

Duran Duran.

No question. No doubt. They were infinitely better.

They were the only band to have a no. 1 with a Bond theme.
Quite impressive. And they had that incredible song in the '90's
Ordinary World. What a great song that was.

Spandau Ballet annoyed the sheesh out of me. They had one good
song, Chant no. 1 (I don't need this pressure on) That was good.
After that they became sheeshe and the way Gary Kemp gurned
into the camera on TOTP annoyed the sheesh out of me.
