Subject: Best male and female VOCALLISTS of the 80s.

Written By: 80smuzikhead on 04/19/05 at 10:24 pm

Based on pure singing ability, rather than songs, who the you think were the best?
I say Freddie Mercury and Annie Lennox, hands down. 8)

1. Peter Schilling (even though Major Tom was his only hit, he had a really good voice!) :D
2. Roland Orzabal (Strong vocals) ;D
3. Robert Smith (Had a different style of voice, that's what makes him great) ;)
4. Roland Gift (Same comment as Robert Smith has) ;)
5. Thomas Dolby  8)

I would just like to say that out of ANY male vocalist, Jimmy Summerville is the best male vocalist ever. No other male vocalist comes close.

As for a female, I would have to say Pepsi Demacque.

I always liked Kenny Loggin's voice... especially on We Are The World, though his music was mediocre (except for Footloose).

I've always liked Simon LeBon's (Duran Duran) voice, especially the mid 80s songs like "Wild Boys" - I thought he put an amazing amount of heart into his vocals.  I think he can be counted as late 80s, but also how about Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).

For female vocalists, I liked Terri Nunn from Berlin and Exene Cervenka from X and, of course, the wonderful and amazing Tina Turner.

Bruce Springsteen is just plain awful. His vocals go right through me and to top it all up, he hasn't got one bit of talent. He's just a show off.

Bruce Springsteen does have good talent for writing songs but it is just his voice.

Okay. He maybe good at writing songs, but makes you think that that's someone with talent? To me writing songs is not having talent.

If song-writing is not a talent what is it then?

I think that writing songs is most definitely a talent. My original question, however, is about who is the best based on pure singing ability. Eg:Meatloaf has a grand, powerful voice, but cannot seem to write his own songs. Jim Steinman writes awesome songs for Meatloaf and many others, but he really shouldn't have tried to sing them!

You are 100% right.

British singer Louise Tucker had one of the best voices in the 80's.  She was a trained opera singer, so naturally she was one of the best.  Sadly, she was pretty much a one hit wonder with "Midnight Blue" in 1983  :\'(

One of my favourite male voices of the 80's was Chris Marsh of the popular Canadian duo Lime.  The way he could make his voice go raspy on those high notes was awesome 8)
