Subject: Admit it guys ... U2 are extremely repetitive and monotonous

U2 are all right, but every one of their songs, at least their hits, all sound the same. "New Year's Day", "Mysterious Ways", even "Vertigo, which is btw a good song, all sound about the same. U2 are very overrated imo.

So far as I am concerned, U2 ceased to exist after The Joshua Tree.
However, from the vantage point of 2005, I can see your point. U2 is a bit like Van Halen in that respect--their sound is so distinctively theirs, the songs begin to melt into one another.
Also, U2 is one of those bands that's greater than the sum of its parts. There is no one in U2 who is particularly amazing at what they do--pedestrian basslines, mediocre and formulaic guitar work (a big part of the problem--"The Edge" is anything but "edgy") and satisfactory drumming, along with a distinctive but hardly phenomenal lead vocalist. However, they've managed to come together to create some decent music, at least before 1987.

Please, name ONE other band who's been as succesful for the last 22 years. AND I can't stress enough that they have maintained their success pretty high all the time even through the 90s.

Great band but not as globally popular as U2.

I'll admit they are successful, but I agree with Devorule. They are pretty repetitive. I have never liked them.

I think U2 ARE a 90s band. I'm not kidding. Their early stuff might sound New Wave but they were never really a New Wave band. I see them more in the Alternative camp closer to Grunge (actually I think Grunge and New Wave are similar in their sense of anti-commercialism, although the Wave succumbed to commercialism more with its peppiness whereas Grunge was more naked and loud).
Popularity doesn't equal goodness. I'm sure you hate "Yeah" by Usher.

Each to their own. I do agree somewhat, although I think they were outstanding in the 80s/early 90s, the last 10-15 years have been the downfall of U2.
R.E.M. on the other hand, now theres a good band that rock just as much now as they did 20 years ago! (Saw them last month) 8)

I'm not much of a U2 fan. They had one or two songs I liked, but ultimately, their best song was 'Take Me to the Clouds Above' by LMC vs. U2
The track sampled 'With or Without You' and is credited as U2's 32nd top 40 hit in the UK :)

I use to love their late 80's hits, but after that, I began to see the same thing that most of you see - repetitive beats, melodies, etc. I did like the song from the "Batman Forever" soundtrack from 1995.
R.E.M. has appealed to me a little more over the years. Their songs may still be not as great as some other classic artists, but at least they are experimental to some degree.

I agree. All of their songs sound the same to me now. I absolutely love their 80s material!
Not a big fan of their 90s thru present work.

I only like 3 of their songs, "Numb", "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" and "Beautiful Day"

Well, I completely disagree. U2 are one of the greatest bands of all time, if not THE greatest.
And regardless of what you people say, most music fans agree with me. They're the biggest band in the world.
But of course, it's perfectly all right if you happen to disagree with what the majority opinion is. I, myself, don't see what's so great about the Beatles, Stairway to Heaven or Coolio's song Gangsta's Paradise from 1995.

YIKES - THE Greatest! That's just a bit of an overstatement on any band's behalf. I love the Beatles, but I don't call them THE greatest.

First off, let me say, I have alot of respect for Bono and the guys - aside from being good musicians, their consistant devotion (via Live Aid, among other things) to political and social causes, make them truly good people too.
However, you know I tend to agree with this sentiment (just on their music itself). Don't get me wrong, I quite love alot of their 80's songs, especially "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Where the Streets Have No Name", as well as the alternative-tinged Actung Baby album from 1991.
Outside of maybe 7 or 8 (at most 10) individual songs though, they really do tend to sound very "samey" and bland.
Again I hate to say it, given their status, but it's the truth (from my opinion, at least).

And Bono's hanging out with politicos--including some real scuzzballs of the religious right!

U2 are very talented and Bonos voice is unique but I do think their songs sound alike. At least the ones released for radio. I guess if I listen to their other songs, I would think differently but that won't happen since in general, I don't like them. :P

Their radio songs are their best. ;)
I've found most of the album tracks sound even more monotonous.

I also like their hits, though not much of a fan
Basically the only U2 CD I have is their greatest hits album featuring songs from the '80's from a couple years ago.

I didnt read any of the posts but the "subject"....I dont care what anyone says to me about U2....Its just my opinion but I think they were DEF overrated and not NEARLY as good as PPLE made them out to be.. They got all political and got into causes...Which isnt a bad thing..BUT..People made them more popular than I think they deserved...they did alot for certain causes....BUT..thier music is NOT that great as PPle make them out to be....they have been Hyped up because...they give to so many charities and I think it is all for show... thier music is not that great...if they really cared they would give in private and not publisize ev little thing about thier giving of money to the needy....they want publicity...to make themselves look good...if they REALLY cared..they would meet with the families...and..or...organizations..and give personally to them and leave the Media out of it...to me..all I have seen is..a band that wants public attention..to make themselves look like heroes..the real Heroes are the firefighters and Police and Medics..U2....Help the families of the tragedies....you already have enough money from record sales to buy and sell all of us working class people .... :\'(

And they're just one of the bunch...
I don't mind U2, as there are much worse, less credible acts out there, but they are truly not as good as their potential allows them. Coldplay seems to have gone the same route. They started off with a lot of potential, but now they're falling into the same trap.
