Subject: What part of the eighties lends the decade its image?

Written By: DevoRule on 04/05/05 at 1:27 pm

I'd say the whole thing, 1980-89.  Really 1979-1990 actually.  But of anything probably the early to mid years of 1982-86.

the early 80s still had a 70s vibe about it. anywhere from 82, 83 onwards.

Mid 80s personally. Lots of influences were about like Madonna, Prince . . . Even Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet were still at it then.

I graduated high school in 1984, so I'm gonna be biased.  ;)  I'll say 1984-1987.  It seems like it started getting early 90's after that.

I graduated 1985 (skipped a year, so based on my age should have been class of '86), but I'd lean more toward 1981 or 82 up to maybe 1987 or so.  Do agree that the last couple of years started seeming more like a mix of 80's and 90's.  I know when I started thinking about a lot of the bands that "scream" 80's to me, the ones I liked, I kept on hitting songs from the early to mid 80's for the most part.  Same thing with fashion, when I kept on bringing up mental images of popular fashion some of the kids my age then wore, I kept hitting early to mid 80's.

I voted for "mid", although I think it's a tie between that and early.

I'd say the 80's had three main eras:

1979-1982 was the transitional period between the 70's and 80's. New wave was big (although had yet to make it big via MTV), video games and VCR's were getting popular, Reagan came into office. While this period had a 70's feel as late as 1982, I'd call it a liitle more 80's-ish.

1983-1986 is the true "80's" to me - MTV at its peak. Madonna, MJ, Billy Idol and countless others were huge. The John Hughes movie phase began, as did big hair and yuppies. The era encompassed in "The Wedding Singer".

Not sure how to classify 1987 - seems torn between the feel of the previous time, as well as 1988-1991, which is a cross of late 80's and 90's. Rap was hitting the mainstream and mid 80's slang was dying out. Felt a little more 'cutting edge' in general.

Yeah 1979-1991 would sum it up well. But if you look at the charts of 1980 and 1981, there is so much 70s music on there:  It's funny how 1980 is so close to the sixties.  Think about it, only 5 years after Vietnam!
