Subject: X Generation/ How are they changing the world today?

Written By: Xer on 03/31/05 at 10:22 am

Now that we're adults, what are we bringing to the workforce, home, exc.  How are the experiences that helped shape us, shaping our world today?

we're more tolerant for one thing and we question authority.

Too, tell you the truth I didn't question authority until years later in my late 20's and early 30's.  I was taught to repect those in authority.  I've noticed that Xer's are now the management in many places and I noticed that more and more are seeking more spiritual things too.  I wanted to know what other changes are being made by the Xer's and how they see the world now that some of us are reaching our middle ages.

i read in an article in a womans magazine about the "peter pan syndrome". before it was around the age of 25 when a person is supposed to grow up and take on the responsibilties of an adult. now that number is being pushed up to 35 because of gen-xers who grew up in a media saturated with toys, games, animation and youthful activities. just look at the video game markets now. the programmers are in their 30s who grew up with atari and coin-op games. they have the background desires for gaming and now they have the control to put out games they always wanted to play.

I guess us Generation X'ers were more tolerable like we used to be and we're more grown up.

Very good point.

Heck, I'm 23 and I'm so not grown-up, LOL. Video games, I think, partly because of that, are just about old enough now to where they're somewhat respectable. Whereas, in the 80's and 90's, I think many adults still perceived them as "threatening", since they were still a new medium.

As for the rate people grow up -- compare today to the Wild West era. Back then, from all I know, it wasn't uncommon for kids to start working and making their own lives early on. They'd often have jobs by their teens and families by, say 20 years old. 40 was approaching old age and most people didn't live past their 60's I don't think.

I've even seen pictures of some teenagers in the first half of the 1900's, and they looked old compared to a modern day teen (well, I suppose having a harder life would have something to do with this too - not just that there really wasn't a teen culture until the mid 50's. Before then, it was like kids to grown-up almost instantly).

People also take better care of themselves and the advances in medicine also contribute to looking younger longer, imo.

That Peter Pan syndrome would disappear if the Boomers would just retire and get out of our way!

Xers are the more liberal answer to the Boomers.  Well, that is, Boomers after the 70s.  In the 60s they were hippies, but by the 80s they changed their priorities and became Yuppies.

My gen, Generation Y, is more conservative generally.  They like clubbing, but kiss authority's a** and always want to "keep it real".  :P
