I'd have to say "Can't We Try", and once again my brain has failed me on who sang it.
Which is embarrassing, because I know ktelqueen has told me once before.
I do like this song though.

You're The Inspiration - Chicago. Sappy but a great song.
That's strange - I always saw this as more of a "happy love song". I can't quite describe it, but songs like this are more easygoing, with more of a "pop" sound and maybe a bit of a rock beat - something that you'd play at a slow dance or a prom, for instance. Whereas "sad" ballads would more classify as sappy. These are usually more adult-contemporary-ish, IMHO.
I'll give you a few examples of each and hope they make sense. :)
--80's Happy ballad/love songs:
Stuck on You - Lionel Richie
Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young (okay, not completely a ballad, but you get the idea!)
Can't Fight this Feeling - REO Speedwagon
I Wanna know what Love is - Foreigner
Heaven - Bryan Adams
--80's sad/sappy ballads:
The One You Love - Glenn Frey (polar opposite of "The Heat is on" LOL)
Cherish - Kool & the Gang
Can't We Try - Dan Hill & Vonda Shepherd
Nothing's Gonna Change my love - Glenn Merdoines (totally agree with this - but I actually like it)
Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh
The 2nd list would be some of my top choices. I also think, categorization aside, anything from Michael Bolton, Loverboy's "Heaven in Your Eyes", "True", and Christopher Cross' "Arthur's Theme" would be up there as sappy too.
PS: Is it just me, or did 1987 have a load of these sappy songs? ;D

"Could've Been" -Tiffany BLLLLGGGGHHHHH!!!!
Once again, I will quote the words to the ingenious version, sung by some girls at my school:
"The flowers you gave me
Are just about to wilt
I put them in the champaigne bottle
Just before it spilt" ::)

Mine too for the most part, LOL! :D
I do like "Making Love out of Nothing at all" though -- way more rock-ish, powerful and just overall better than overdone sap like "The One that You Love". If they had more songs like this, I'd probably be more into them.

Don't know if it's a love song per se, but Come Back by the Mighty Wah is such a great song that I have always found quite sad :\'(
"Come Back! I'm willing to try
Come Back! Don't let time go by
Come Back! The will to survive's
Come Back"
Other great songs that are somewhat sad:
Time by the Alan Parsons Project
All the Tea in China - Susan Jacks
The Power of Love (You Are My Lady) - Air Supply
Lonely in Love - Dan Fogelberg

I always thought with songs of the heart..there was room for intepretation..some of the songs you suggest are happy love songs - I still class as very sappy love songs ;)

My vote goes to Chris De Burgh's 'Lady In Red'.

I always have to skip the radio stations either on the well, radio or any internet radio stations whenever any of their songs are played!
I kinda think the song It's so hard to leave you by late 70s-mid 80's German girl group Arabesque was a bit sappy, but they're still my fave girl group! :)

Here's one ... "Coming Home" by Bryan Adams. It was quite popular amongst the Canadian Scene in 1981 (before he broke through to America). It was a very sappy love song, but nonetheless, remains my all-time favourite Adams song 8)

I believe that "The Spy Who Loved Me" (which was released in 1977) is also called "Nobody Does It Better' by Carly Simon. It is a pretty sappy song.
Aww, you're kidding me? This is one of the greatest Bond songs ever. It may be sappy, but there is no way this can be worse than the likes of Chris de Burgh, Chicago or Richard Marx!!
