Subject: Teddy Ruxpin

Does anyone here remember Teddy Ruxpin, the toy or the show?

Oh yeah, it was such a great show. And it had a very interesting storyline that ran through all the episodes, with the crystals and MAVO and the Forbidden City.

The toys were great too, even though I never had one myself. They were little stuffed animals that would start talking whenever you put a cassette into their backs. I remember going to the toystore with my parents and watching demos of the toys being operated, and being really impressed.

'Come dream with me tonight'- dream with me tonight
Lets go to far off places, and search for treasures bright
Come dream with me tonight
lets build a giant airship, and sail into the sky,
lets watch, the ground so far below,
Lets watch the birds, as they fly by
fly so high
come dream with me tonight. '

Yeah, I remember Teddy Ruxpin

My friend's sister had all those stuffed animals. There was a centipede one named Grubby.

If you put specific tapes in Teddy and Grubby at the same time, it was like they were having a conversation.  I always found it weird.

I had a talking ALF doll...same concept, but much cooler.

I was born in 85, but I can remember many things from as far back as '88, and one of them was Teddy Ruxpin. I didn't own one myself, but my cousin did so I had ready access to one. I was always trying to figure out how his mouth moved with the words.... I couldn't for the life of me come to a decent conclusion.

I just guessed that the mouth action was an automatic open/close motion regardless of what Ruxpin said.  ;D

The tapes had special encoding so that the mouth movements matched up.
That's why the tapes sounded wonky when you put it in a normal tape player.

Next to "The Raccoons", Teddy Ruxpin was one of the best Canadian cartoons of the 80's.  I never missed an episode :)

Couldn't Ruxpin be a French name?
"Teddy Ruxpin" sounds like the name of a Quebecois plumbing contractor!

Remembr that doll for boys they were marketing about the same time?  "My Buddy."  Carrying that around was a good way to get the cr*p kicked out of you at the sandbox.

Anyway, I was gonna bring up the Ozzy tapes in the Teddy Ruxpin, but I got beaten to the punch, so...

Teddy Ruxpin wasn't Canadian.

It wasn't all Canadian, but it is Canadian in part.  The cartoon was produced by DiC, which is an American production company, but the key animator of the show was Canadian and the cartoon itself was filmed out of Canada.  John Stocker, the voice of Gimmick was Canadian and John Koensgen, the voice of Tweeg was Canadian :)

I never owned a Teddy Ruxpin, but I do remember the commercials well. One of my classmates in my 2nd grade class actually brought Teddy Ruxpin to school one day-another classmate was scared to death and refused to go near that thing! Anyway, I thought it was pretty cute, but never had any desire to own one myself.

The popularity of Teddy Ruxpin must have lasted a little past the '80s, because my parent's bought me one when I was like 3 or 4, that would've been about 1990 or 1991. I lost it a long time ago, but finally came across it when when we moved 5 years ago. I still have it in my closet today, even though it doesn't work anymore.

My grandmother bought me Teddy Ruxpin, I was also intrigued as to how his mouth moved, but anyway my cousin eventually broke his mouth. I have since bought a new one off ebay.

I remember Teddy Ruxpin.  I didn't own one, but my friend had one, and it was fun.  She also had Cricket, another talking doll.  Talking dolls were very huge in 1986.  You had Teddy Ruxpin, Baby Talk, and Cricket.  It was a precursor to Child's Play that came out two years later.
