Subject: Best Power Ballads of the 80's
Written By: eightiesfan on 02/14/05 at 8:14 am
I love most of the songs I listed on this poll, but my three faves would be:
Home Sweet Home
Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Never Say Goodbye
There are probably lots more great 80's power ballads too that I didn't think of when I made this poll.

Neither would I. When you talk about Power Ballads, you are talking about bands such as Whitesnake, Mister Mister, Pat Benetar, Billy Idol, Queen, Tina Turner and Meatloaf to name but a few.

Yes, but that was released in 1991. In this case we are talking about Power Ballads from the 80's.

Why didn't I reply to this sooner? ;)
Anyway, in short, I happen to love this genre - great way to blend hard rock and a love song . In fact, arguably, power ballads made me get into metal/hard rock in the first place since they were far more "commercial" and would get Top 40 airplay. I often heard these songs as the first by many of the above bands.
While, I admit, toward the end of the genre's run (1989-91 and a teeny bit of '92), some of the songs were kinda generic, so I can see why it ended (Trixter, Winger, Slaugher, Warrant, etc were basically copycat bands--not that they weren't good, just unoriginal). But I liked some of the earlier ones, as well as the more unique.
I picked:
Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
Sister Christian - Night Ranger
The Flame - Cheap Trick
In essence, all these songs varied a little from the "formula" power ballad.
Wanted DOA is really more of a slow-mid tempo cowboy anthem; Sister Christian is on the arena rock ballad side (like Journey with a harder edge); and Cheap Trick were really more early pop/punk/hard rock than a hair band. "The Flame" was just their slower love song, tailored to fit in with the power ballad sound, but it's superior IMHO to many of the others.

I've always liked these songs, probably because I'm not that much of a hair metal fan and these songs make it palatable. Close runner-up is Heaven by Warrant.
