Subject: 80's Cheesecake! (music)

Written By: Chrisrj on 02/10/05 at 5:16 pm

This is a name I've given 80's pop ballads.  That's when it has that 80's cheese feel, but it's just too awesome to forget.

For example:

(I've Had) the Time of My Life, from Dirty Dancing
Simply the Best, by Tina Turner

Any of you know other songs like that?

I'm only firing one up...but it's probably the grandaddy of 'em all...

(To save confusion, I'm using the word 'awesome' as in 'awesomely bad'...)

'The Lady In Red' - Chris De B(l)urgh...

(Must rinse my mouth out...!)

Boston sang it, 1986.

I remember another one, Almost Paradise, from Footloose.

And these are cheesey, but who says cheese is bad? ;)

I am surprised no one mentioned, Nothing Is Gonna Change My Love For You by Glen Mederios.
Probally one of the most chessiest songs, that I have heard in awhile, the video is chessy too!  ::)

I would like to mention, Glory of Love by Peter Cetera, Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes, and On The Wings of Love by Jeffrey Osbourne.

Apparently y'alls' definition of cheesy is my definition of romantic.  I love most of the songs mentioned in this post.

Apparently y'alls' definition of cheesy is my definition of romantic.  I love most of the songs mentioned in this post.
For me, the difference between romantic and cheezy is to do with lyrics, particularly the use of cliches, such as:
But the band it played our favourite song.
'Held you in my arms so strong.
We held so close.
We danced so slow.
And I thought I'd never let you go!
Together forever......

(Bon Jovi "Never Say Goodbye" 1987)
Of course, everybody has different tastes -and that is a cliche in itself! ;D
Pull the strings of emotion.
Take a ride into unknown pleasures.
'Feel like a child on a dark night.
Wishing there was some kind of heaven.

(Culture Club "Victims" 1983)
Now that to me is romantic, without being cheezy. Hang on a minute.... :\'( Those words are original and I think quite beautifful. But there are bound to be those who disagree with me. Sorry to crap on!
Cheers,
Dee  :-*
PS: Speaking before of NKOTB, I have a very unpleasant memory of being stuck in the car with my friend, while we waited for her politician father. I was subjected over and over again to the NKOTB X-mas Album. Talk about cheeze surpreme, PEE-UKE!!!

The reason why I do not like Endless Love, is not because it was a bad song, far from it, it's because it was overplayed, like crazy!

;D

My favorite cheesy song?

Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes: Up Where We Belong

It was in "An Officer and A Gentleman" (1982).  We sang it at my junior high graduation or something.  It was one of those inspirational feel-good songs that just got waaaay overplayed!

Speaking of Joe Cocker, one for me is 'Edge of A Dream', his 1984 single from the film 'Teachers'.  It was not a bad song, but because it was written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, it got massive overkill on radio over here.

I remember that song.  I remember going to see that movie too!

"Be Good Johnny," Men At Work.

That one never charted because it wasn't a single, it was just an album cut the DJs took to playing.  Imagine having that kind of latitude!  Anyway, that song get way overplayed.  It's a very annoying song after you've heard it five times, let alone 5000!
