Subject: Which is better? Classic or SNL or the new SNL
Written By: Skippy on 02/06/05 at 1:57 am
Okay, I'm sittin' here watchin' a Saturday Night Live from 1978. It has "The Blues Brothers" and Steve Martin as Host. Steve just did "King TUT" and I don't think it was lip sinc.
So which is better: Old SNL classics or new SNL? I prefer old SNL. I thought is fresher, riskier, and had better talent.

Totally agree.
SNL now is boring most of the time and isn't as funny.

So true - the oldies are the best. I was watching SNL just so I could see U2 perform - the show is just not funny any more.

SNL from the 70s is gold.

I loved it from 1975-80....then it was spotty in the 80's with Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscapo....then I loved it all over again when they had Farley, Spade, Hartmen, Meyers and Carvey :)

My thoughts exactly, Mark! Right now, it's just bad and unimaginative. They are going for cheap laughs, instead of fun and actual comedy.

The original cast of SNL (Radner, Aykroyd, Belushi, Chase, Murray, etc.) was by far the best. However, after watching a few of the classic episodes, I was surprised that even back then there were a good number of "dud" sketches (sketches that are lame and/or unfunny), just as there are now. Even the greats never bat 1.000.

Old is better than new but I've seen very little old. 90s was best, today is worst.

My favorites are the "Golden Age" episodes. The first three seasons. Chevy Chase left after season 1 but remains one of the funniest performers in the shows history.
Following second would be the "Silver Age" episodes, 1994-1995. The best episodes were the ones that included Rob Schneider.
The Murphy/Crystal Years earn honorable mention but are mostly hit and miss.
The new cast is awful and the show is definitely in a lull.
Some personal opinions:
I never thought Phil Hartman was funny
Tina Fay and Jimmy Fallon are awful as news anchors
The year before Davis Spade left was the last “good†year.

As far as the comedy end of it,I'll go with what Mark said...As far as musical guests, the older episodes..
