It was big in the African-American and Latino (primarily Puerto Rican) inner-city neighborhoods of New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey since the late seventies. It became bigger in the late eighties, when it went mainstream.

Would you say rap is influenced by 80s music, Tanya?
BTW I like Old School and Underground Rap, not current Commercial/Mainstream/MTV rap.

Rap was influenced by some parts of eighties music, like some club music. However, it was part of the eighties. It typically is influenced by R&B, soul, some rock and other things.

Do you think it was the African American equivalent to New Wave, because that's what VH1's "History of Hip Hop" thing said.

No, because New Wave died out in the mid-eighties, where Rap continued growing. I also think it had far more influences than New Wave. As far as hotness, maybe b/c it signaled new possible genres.

Do you consider The Beastie Boys Hip Hop?

No, I considered them rap. I don't see them as hip-hop. In all honesty, they've moved so far away from their orignal roots that they shouldn't be considered hip-hop, but more of an alternative sound.

I party agree. They're sorta underground hip-hop (ok that is kinda alternative, but it's still rap in a bit of a loose sense). I like "Ill Communication" better than "Licensed to Ill". I haven't heard their stuff in between (Paul's Botique and Check Your Head) and their subsequent stuff (except for Intergalactic and their recent hits).

Hip Hop is a culture in itself and rap is part of that culture. As for how big it was in the 80s............I grew up in the UK and the first taste of what I considered to be Hip Hop / Rap was Herbie Hancock's tune Rockit. This was about 84 if my memory serves me correct. 85/86 was the years that Rap / Hip Hop really grew on me and actually meant something.
Did 80s Music influence Rap / Hip Hop > Of course it did. In a huge way. If you listen to a lot of 80s tunez - it's electro albeit in a 'pop' format. Electro is a huge part of Hip Hop culture as we all know. Electro and Rap were fused on many tunez. Hence, why I'm of the opinion that 80s music did influence Rap / Hip Hop.
Rap and Hip Hop is my Musik of choice today. I brought Herbie's tune in 84 when I was a teenager (14) and I've been hooked ever since. For 21 years I've been playin breaks, beats, hip hop, Electro and Rap and it's all good. There have been some whack ass tunez throughout the years but with all music it's a case of shifting through and weeding out the sh**e.
1989 - 1996 were the Golden Years for Hip Hop for me. Now there are just golden moments..........but oh boy are those moments worth it!
