Subject: Is Depeche Mode's Violator an 80s album?
Written By: Full_House_Fan on 02/04/05 at 2:38 pm
Yes I know it was released in 1990, but for one thing it is 100% eighties in style pretty much (well i havent heard the whole album, but "Enjoy the Silence" is). Plus I bet almost all of the album was recorded in 1989 considering the album was released in Jan of Feb 1990. Also, it's lumped in with real 1980s synth pop.
So? ....

Violator was released in 1990, so it's a nineties album. The only song on there that could even remotely be considered eighties is "Personal Jesus," as the single was released in 1989. Also, it is not a "synth-pop" album. Far from it. Compare it to any of their albums from Speak & Spell to Black Celebration and you'll see what I'm talking about. DM were using guitars by the time of Violator so it's not all synth. They pretty much abandoned that format in 1987 when they released Music For The Masses. Synth-pop was pretty much dead (unfortunately) by the mid-eighties. It might also be said that Violator is DM's most "commercial" album to date.

What would "Violator" be? Grunge? Indie rock?

Why categorise it? Just call it "music!" Good music! :) I couldn't really put it into one single category anyway...

What's DM's best album in your opinion?

Well, my two personal favourite albums of theirs are Some Great Reward and Black Celebration. But all their albums are great in their own right.

All of DM's albums are great in their own way, I love all of them. It really depends on the mood you are in. Each album has a different sound to it and each has a progression from the previous.
For instance if you are in a poppy mood then Speak and Spell, A dark mood then Black Celebration or Songs of Faith and Devotion, or in a tranquil mood then Exciter. I'm sure most people would say Violator as their favourite, but I put that down to commercialism myself. I don't often listen to it myself since it has several overplayed songs....Enjoy The Silence, Personal Jesus and Policy Of Truth. But I love Waiting For The Night and Halo and Clean from that album.

it's an 80s album. the music on there was made in the 80s (1989), it just had the unfortunate timing being released in 1990.

1990 supported it well, didn't it? I mean it sold well, I dont think DM were seen as cheesy by then like a lot of other early-mid 80s bands were?
Besides, what difference would being released in 1989 make over 1990? It's not like everyone shaved their poofy hair and said "Yo, I'm from the street and depressed. The 80s are wack. Let's watch some Beavis and Butthead"
on 12:00 am January 1st, 1990. It happened over time.

Dont forget Ultra. This was released in 1997. Right now it is my favorite. Like a pp said, it depends on the mood you are in! All the records are so different (yet similar). Lately, my mood has been wanting me to listen to Ultra - kinda mellow, kinda not.
