Subject: Home Alone? 80s movie? (First One only)

Written By: FullHouseFan! on 01/24/05 at 11:32 pm

Does anybody consider "Home Alone" an 80s movie?  I mean, it wasnt teen angst, but it was a John Hughes movie about kids.  (chris columbus directed it)  Also, doesn't it take place in Shermer? But it is darker than most 80s John Hughes.

That movie premiered in 1990. Basically a '90's movie.

but the movie would have been made in 1989. pre-production and script would have set it back another year. i'd say it's an 80s movie.

So was Home Alone filmed in '89?  Or just written then?  Nonetheless it has an 80s atmosphere.  I mean the house and his bully family members are sooooo eighties.  Of course that's Hughes as much as it is proximity to the 80s.

Yeah i know it was made in 1990 ... so yes it is 90s, but is it more to the like of 80s classics like Uncle Buck, Honey I Shrunk The kids, etc, or more 90s stuff like Richie Rich, The Nightmare Before x-mas, The Santa Clause, etc.?

The impact it had upon the culture was completely nineties. The hands-to-cheeks screaming phenomenon was 90s.... It was definitely a nineties movie.

Yeah I'd have to agree.  That's a very nineties thing! John Hughes was sorta breaking from the whole Pretty in Pink code by then anyways.

But the air did look kinda eighties, probably because the whole Grunge thing hadn't come in yet, not to mention it was filmed in the Chicago 'burbs like all Hughes' movies.  Although it did sorta have a dark look to it, doncha think? Probably the very early 90s recycling/Planet Earth thing.

The family was very eighties, but the enemies were 90s.  Especially how they were really jerks, but were dumba*ses too so they were harmless.  Really really telling of the P.C. confusion of the time.  And the paint can in the nuts ... Ouch!

But the movie is really kinda 1989-ish on the whole.

on a second note:  Has anyone seen Captain Planet? Cheeseville!  :D

I consider it '90s because its legacy lived on well after the movie was released.  It was tradition in fact to watch Home Alone every year at Thanksgiving in my house when it would air on TBS.  Then in 1992, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York came out, which despite being basically a rehash of the original story was still pretty good.

I wish they wouldn't have went an ruined the franchise with so many direct-to-DVD sequels with different kids in the year since.  They should have stopped after Home Alone 2.

Yeah, I don't see how it's an 80s movie.  Macaulay Culkin was a 90s icon, through and through.  It's also nothing like John Hughes' 80s teen flicks, considering it focuses on a kid and not insecure teens.  It basically set the stage for all of the corny live action slapstick comedies that came out of the 1990s.

I consider it 90s, because all through grade school-- I started school in fall of 1990--that was like mandatory holiday viewing every Christmas season. So it's 90s. And every little girl with eyes was swoon over Macauly Culkin. They'd her us into the gym with the big screen and VCR, and we'd watch the movie. Good memories.
