Subject: afterschool cartoons? Can anyone help?

Written By: wadelex on 01/09/05 at 1:26 am

There was a space adventure based afterschool cartoon, perhaps in early 80's where the ship they were traveling through space in what was a revampted sailing ship from what was a dried up ocean.  It featured a huge hole in it's bow that served as huge laser.  It also had fighters that would launch from it.  I think the captain or engineer may have been the stereotypical big, whitheaired, burly, seagoing captain in uniform.  The name of the ship may or may not have been the Argonaught.  Can anyone help with the name?    Wade:-)

Hmm I have a couple of suggestions but I am not sure if they are what you are looking for, Wade.

Sounds suspiciously like the English translation of the Japanese anime "Space Battleship Yamato" - known as "Star Blazers" in the West.

The wreck of the (real-life) WWII Japanese ship "Yamato" was salvaged and converted into a spacefaring vessel. In the English version, the new ship was named the Argo in a tribute to Jason and his Greek ship. I forget if the same thing happened in the original Japanese version.

This does describe the introductory episodes of "Starblazers" (first episode or two I believe - hard to recall if the ship took flight in the very first episode) - as the mission was set and they took off from Earth...
