Subject: Video Shows prior to Mtv?
Written By: HeartsAfire on 11/23/04 at 10:24 pm
I recall staying up late on weekends during my pre/early teens to watch Nite Tracks (I believe it was on TBS)...
Earlier than that I also recall HBO doing "Video Jukebox" segments in between movies...and occasionally would show a half hour show. The first video I ever recall seeing on there was Huey Lewis & the News' "Workin' for a Livin".
Anyone else remember these (or other) shows prior to Mtv & VH1?

There was always Friday Night Videos on NBC. Night Flight on USA often showed videos in between offbeat movies and other odd stuff they would show.
Casey Kasem also did Americas Top 10 on Sunday mornings. They would usually show at least two full videos of songs off the countdown.

I definitely remember Friday Night Videos b/c it took my family forever to get cable (late 80s, in fact) and it was my only way of seeing videos besides Kidd Video (honestly) and American Bandstand.

You mean "Video Hits" with Samantha Taylor and later with Dan Gallagher? :D LOL...yeah I remember it! I used to watch it! Oh wait!! Maybe you mean "Good Rockin' Tonight" (or was it the awful "-ite" spelling?) with Terry David Mulligan! I still have a Platinum Blonde special that I recorded on "Good Rockin' Tonight" on Beta that I think I recently converted to VHS. :)
We didn't get MuchMusic until 1987 when it was free in our cable package (or something), but before then I watched loads of video shows, including ones already mentioned like "Friday Night Videos" and the ones I mentioned...but I think my favourite show ever (and I think only Canadians would know this one) was "The New Music." It's still shown on MuchMusic, but it was awesome as a show on its own on regular telly, especially in the early 80's because they always had interesting interviews and showed great videos. :)

I remember watching Night Tracks and it was on TBS. It was the mid 80's before we got MTV in our area, so my cousins and I would stay up late to try to catch "Thriller" on Night Tracks.

"Test Pattern" was hilarious!! ;D I watched it all the time! MuchMoreMusic had brought it back briefly, I believe, really early Sunday mornings, but they've stopped unfortunately.

Oops... I realized in my recollection it was NIGHT (not Nite) Tracks. Cool to see someone made a Web site devoted to the show. :-)

Remember when FNV was hosted by Henry Cho? It wasn't until the 90s actually but I think he killed it.

I vaguely remember Video Hits awhile back ago, New Music I think was on CityTV (a TV station in Toronto) before it was on Much Music.
