Subject: Cheesey 80's Songs?

Written By: Tapp Out Radio on 11/12/04 at 8:53 am

I'm going to do a one-off show dedicated to the more cheesier songs that were around in the 80's.

I don't like using the word crap because in my honest unbiased opinion hardly any songs from the 80's were crap, but there were a lot of "cheesey songs". Songs like The Spitting Image song, the Star Trekkin' song, etc.

I'll start the ball rolling:

Star Treekin' - The Firm
The Chicken Song - Spitting Image

Anyone else like to contribute?  :)

oh my gosh!  :P

i think most songs from the 80's were probably pretty cheesy!  that was the fun of the 80's.  it was a failrly carefree time back then.  not too much going on - other than reaganomics - to worry about.  it was pre-aids.  it was just fun!  i'll add a few!

i eat cannibals - toto coelo
the buffy song - don't know who sang that one
"buffy, buffy come back to me
why'd ya have to go and OD?
what about uncle bill and mrs beasley..."
AEIOU and sometimes Y - EBN-OZN

Rappin' Rodney- Rodney Dangerfield
Boom, Boom, Boom, Let's go back to my room (again, I can't remember who did it)
I can't remember the name but it was supposed to be Reagan (Rappin' Ronnie?)
Don't Worry, Be Happy -Bobby McFarrin (I think that is his last name)

That is all I can think of off hand.

Paul Lekakis sang Boom, Boom, Boom, Let's go back to my room and Boys Don't Cry sang I Wanna Be A Cowboy.

My pick for cheesy music is the remake of Putting On The Ritz by Taco.

Other cheesy songs (and my favorites) is The Future Is So Bright (I Got To Wear Shades) by Timbuk 3, Walk The Dinosaur by Was Not Was, and The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats.

I don't know if I'd call some of these songs (Der Kommissar, Safety Dance, and Lick It Up) "cheesey," if so you would have to add - Space Age Whiz Kids - Joe Walsh and She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby.  I usually think of sappy songs as being cheesey, something like "Walk Like An Egyptian."

I've never heard of this song.  Was it played on the radio?  I wonder if it is available for download -- it sounds like a fun song (along the lines of Dr. Demento's "Star Trekkin").

Just to clarify. A group called 'The Firm' did Star Trekkin' (also had a very minor hit called 'Arthur Daley ('Es Alright)'. I am presuming Dr Demento had it on one with his compilations.

Vangelis: Chariots of Fire (theme from that movie about runners training for the 1924 Olympics)

* I don't know if anybody elese remembers, but Nolan Thomas was a kid rapper (like a 12-year-old Vanilla Ice).  His video featured kid versions of Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, and others)

** Thanks to whomever posted Stan Ridgeway's "Camouflage."  A lot of people thought Wall Of Voodoo was finished when Stan Ridgeway left.  Not quite.  "The Far Side of Crazy" featured a great Ennio Marconi-esque guitar riff, and lyrics which began:
I'm Pilot and Jesus
And I wept when Lennon died
Yet I envied his assailant
When I visited the shrine
I cried for all those Beatle Fans
So old so quick they grow
I follow the example to destroy
What I love most....

Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones: Kiss (written by Prince)
Baltimora: Tarzan Boy (One of the worst records ever made!)
Charlene: I've Never Been To Me (THE worst record ever made!)
Barry Manilow: Some Kind of Friend
Iam Siam: She Went Pop (Austrian band)
Opus: Live is Life (another Austrian band)
Extreem: Mama Don't Want to Go to School Today (Same group who did "More Than Words," retch retch retch!)
Peter Schilling: Major Tom (Coming Home)
Howard Jones: Life in One Day (HoJo was always a guilty pleasure of mine!)
Morris Day & The Time: Jungle Love ("Jesse...now Jerome....eeyessss!")
Rockin' Sidney: My Toot Toot (a huge disfavor to Cajun music!)
A Flock of Seagulls: Who's That Girl (1986--talk about not quitting while you're ahead!)
Sly Fox: Let's Go All the Way
Timex Social Club: Rumours
Sheila E: The Glamorous Life (great drummer, cheesy song)
Survivor: The Eye of the Tiger (Butt rock theme to "Rocky III" starring Mr.T)
Saga: On the Loose (Butt rock theme to...butt rock)
Y&T: Summertime Girls (Butt rock with bikini video)
The Scorpions: Rock You Like a Hurricane (Butt rock West Germany)
Paul Lekakis: Boom Boom Boom Let's Go Back To My Room
Scritti Politti: Boom! (There She Was)
ABC: When Smokey Sings
Vangelis: Chariots of Fire (theme from that movie about runners training for the 1924 Olympics)

Totally and utterly disagree with:

Matthew Wilder: Break My Stride
Art of Noise featuring Max Headroom: Paranoimia
Howard Jones: Life in One Day
ABC: When Smokey Sings
Sly Fox: Let's Go All the Way

I think if you took those out of your list, I certainly wouldn't disagree with the rest.  ;D

The tracks I listed above, in my opinion were very good tunes - especially Matthew Wilder.  I personally don't detect much of a cheesy odour emanating from any of those...... ;)

Ah, Chasey, you misunderstand me.  "Cheesy" does not necessarily equal "bad" in my book.  There's good cheesy and bad cheesy.  For example, Howard Jones, Wall of Voodoo, and  Art Of Noise are "good cheesy," and Baltimora, Falco, and Saga are "bad cheesy."  There are many more songs on that list I like even though I call them "cheesy."  I like lots of cheesy music.  I loved Sly Fox, "Let's Go All The Way."  The first ABC album, "Lexicon of Love" is superb from start to finish, and so are many songs from their two subsequent albums.  By the time they did "Smokey Sings" they had "jumped the shark."  And Matthew Wilder...can you say "Arnold Horshack"?  'Nuff said!

Yo Little Brother by Nolan Thomas is quite crappy.  It actually made it to #57 on the U.S. charts, which would make for a good story line on Unsolved Mysteries  ;D

;D
There was always a parade of the horribles lurking in the lower half of the Hot 100!
I found the Nolan Thomas 12" at a flea market some years ago.  I bought it just to hear it again, yep it was quite crappy, indeed.  I passed on Baltimora's followup to "Tarzan Boy," "The Woody Boogie."
:P

There was around 4,126 songs that peaked in the Billboard Hot 100 in the 80's.  I know what every single one sounds like and that parade would span atleast 16 cities  ;D

Thanks Maxwell, I know where you're coming from.  I still don't think those songs highlighted were cheesy though.  :D

I guess I like the wrong sort of cheesy, lol.

ABC frontman, Martin Fry was combating Hodgkins Disease by the time 'When Smokey Sings' came out in 1987 - I love that song.  8)

I love 'Tarzan Boy' by Baltimora but I also like 'Let's go all the way' by Sly Fox so I am not totally unredeemable.  ;) ;D
