Subject: Your Favourite '80s Mega Hit

Written By: Alice on 09/22/04 at 7:04 am

A single had to reach Number One position on the both sides of the Atlantic to become a mega hit. Choose your favourite one, please!

Well, it was extremely hard for me to choose between Blondie's "Call Me", John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over", The Human League's "Don't You Want Me", Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen", The Police's "Every Breath You Take", Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", The Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls", Berlin's "Take My Breath Away", Los Lobos' "La Bamba" and Madonna's "Like A Prayer" as all are as equally great songs. I went for the first because it is a pure New Wave excellence.

yeesh. hmm, out of all of them i chose 'every breath you take'...i was too much into punk, goth and metal in the 80s to care for the popular stuff.

I loved all of those!  But I choose "I wanna dance with somebody" Whitney Houston.  I used to go out on my back deck and suntan and listen to that tape and jam out to that song  ;D

I love them all honestly! But, I chose "West End Girls" by Pet Shop Boys! Tough one, though.

Hard to pick just one, here are my top 3:
1. The Police: Every Breath You Take
2. The Human League: Don't You Want Me
3. Pet Shop Boys: West End Girls

A mega hit just ain't where it's at. Great then, not so great now. But...these are the best in the list (I likes 'em):

Call Me - Blondie (1980)
Don't You Want Me - The Human League (1981)
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners (1982)
Down Under - Men At Work (1982)
West End Girls - The Pet Shop Boys (1985)
A Groovy Kind Of Love - Phil Collins (1988)

I went with West End Girls - The Pet Shop Boys (1985).  :)

;)

With all of the great songs of the period THESE were the ones that hit number 1 on both sides of the pond...anyone have a list of the number 2's?

There are a few worry songs here but not many, I'd have to pick John Lennon's Statring Over.
