For me, it would definitely be INXS, followed by Midnight Oil.

INXS for consistency and staying power, but there were so many other great groups...in no particular order...
Divinyls
Icehouse
Hunters and Collectors
Hoodoo Gurus
1927
The Angels
Australian Crawl
Cold Chisel
Crowded House
Little River Band
Kids In The Kitchen
Metal As Anything
Mondo Rock
The Models....
Sorry eightiesfan, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I just wanted to highlight some of the other really good bands that weren't recognised, sadly, for their talents :)

my favourite band of the 80s was uncannny x men and they still are. Having seen them in concert three times since 1985 and have met them all those three times( my dad knows brian well having been real good friends with the promoting company and hired them out at his disco quite a few times int he real early eighties ) and i received my most prise posession of a massive photo signed for my birthday I am still in love with the band to this day and 50years will be my wedding song.

Split Enz officially moved to Australia in 1979. So during the 80s at least, they were an Australian band. And a very cool one, at that. ;)

FYI: For anyone who ever wondered why Rick Springfield talks with an American accent even though he's from Australia - I was watching an episode of Biography about him one time and his former girlfriend, Linda Blair, said that he took acting classes in the 70's to get rid of his Australian accent in the hopes of finding more acting work.

Icehouse
Xmen
Split Enz
Australian Crawl
Barnsey
Farnsey
The Mentals
Hoodoo's
LRB
Kids
my choices.
Men at Work were Scottish and only lived here long enough to release the single, Colin Hay lives in Seattle now.
Love Rick but consider him more of a 70's guy.
Midnight Oil - hated them then and hate them now.
Inxs - have never liked them - totally up themselves even as teenagers when they played at my high school during lunch. And seriously guys - a reality show to pick a new lead singer ? get over yourselves and reture gracefully.
Church - saw them in concert 20 years ago and they were BAD.

What great taste Kelli :) As you can see by my name and avatar you can see who I was obsessed with back then. 50 Years is my funeral song - I have it on a CD in a safe with my funeral plans.

That isn't quite correct BMG. Hay WAS born in Scotland, but he formed the band with Ron Strykert in Melbourne in 1978 and it lasted right through until 1985. Their first single was released in 1980 with "Down Under" on the B-side. It was released again in November 1981 and went to #1 before being released in the US in January 1983, ironically after the "Cargo" album had been refused release by CBS on two occasions during 1982 because they felt it wouldn't be a commercial success, and after "Who Can It Be Now?" had already topped the US chart.
And my vote for the best Australian live band of all time goes to The Angels.

INXS was great. I do agree that they got too big for their own selves, though.

But Colin never felt Australian enough to get citizenship. And when he speaks of Australia now its in quite a derogatory tone - despite how much money we made for him !! I do love "Who can it be now" - but living in Perth during the "America's Cup" years meant myself and much of our population became heartily sick to death of Down Under by the mid 80's !! It was played with a certain degree of ad nauseum about 40 times a day!!
I wasnt a fan of The Angels as a band - but I do love their classic hits.

I saw The Angels, along with The Radiators back in 1981 when they supported AC/DC. Brilliant concert all round ! 8) I've also had the experience of working with Doc on two occasions. ;D
