Subject: For Anyone Who Lived In The 80s..
Written By: lebeiw15 on 07/03/04 at 12:52 am
What were some of those songs that "everybody" knew? These days, I think almost everyone has heard "Who Let the Dogs Out" whether in the store, on TV, out of a kid's stereo or at a baseball arena. In the 90s, a lot of people were familiar with "Tubthumping" (I get knocked down, but i get up again..)
What were some of those 80s songs that were incredibly popular? I'm just interested.

Oh, I know hundreds of songs from then. I was born in the year 1980, so I was in the 'single-digits' throughout the decade. However, during the 80s I didn't know too many songs at the time they came out; lots of them were new to me within the past ten years.

I haven't heard of either of these.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned either Erasure (Sometimes springs to mind) or Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me and Alive and Kicking will always bring back memories of Sammy's night club in town (which is no longer there unfortunately).

Top Gun
"Take My Breath Away"--Berlin
"Danger Zone"--Kenny Loggins
Caddyshack
"I'm Alright"--Kenny Loggins
Arthur
"Arthur's Theme (Best that You can Do)"
Dirty Dancing
"I've Had the Time of My Life"--Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
An Officer and a Gentleman
"Up Where We Belong"--Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
Stuff from The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, stuff from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Other music, like Billy Joel was big in the '80s. Also the Police (not just Sting) with "Roxanne", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", and "Every Breath you Take"
and I see someone else already mentioned "Thriller"
But the Mike and the Mechanics song was called "Silent Running". Another one they did was "Living Years"

Depeche Mode. Most people know that. And "Enjoy The Silence" isn't 80's. It's from 1990.
I don't know how or why you quoted Rush as saying that because he didn't.

The only part that was Rush's quote was "Standard 80's songs"
I thought it might get his attention...his little tagline under his name reads "Your Own Personal Jesus", another Depeche Mode tune.

The one I used to like, until I figured out what the song was about was...
"The Stroke"--Billy Squier. (That's okay, you can stroke yourself....)

I graduated HS in 1985, so I was right in the middle of the 80's and remember it all. As much as it pains me to say it, there was no one bigger or as all encompassing back then as Michael Jackson. He was the King of Pop. Madonna was a close runner-up.
On a side note, while walking down memory lane, I remembered a family trip in the summer of 1986 when "The Woo-Woo Song" by Gregory Abbott (I think) came on the radio every five minutes. Seemed horrible back then but a great memory now. ;D

"The Stroke"--Billy Squier. (That's okay, you can stroke yourself....)
Squier clames the song is not about that per se. He says it's about what you have to do to succeed in the music biz.
