One of my all-time favorites that isn't listed is Quarterflash 'Harden My Heart'; it's so hauntingly beautiful and I could literally listen to it over and over all day long! I also love the cover of that album too, with the spooky looking ghosts standing in the forest.

It was a bit tough for me because I reckon about 3 quarters of that list had other hits in other places, so I tried to be as strict as I could and picked . . .

'Breakin' my stride' - Matthew Wilder
'What I am' - Eddie Bricknell and New Bohemians
'Obsession' - Animotion
'Politics of dancing' - Re-flex

Eddy Grant, Kylie Minogue, Martika and T'Pau one hit wonders? Lol.

Well there are too many 'others' so I'll just list my top 5 from this list:

1 - The Flirts
2 - When In Rome
3 - Madness
4 - Tommy Tutone
5 - Eddy Grant

Kajagoogoo: Too Shy
When In Rome: The Promise
Re-Flex: The Politics of Dancing
Modern English: I Melt With You
Dexy's Midnight Runners: Come on Eileen

Don't forget Men Without Hats: Safety Dance.

I don't think Madness belongs on the list.  They were the biggest ska band in the world, and had many hits in Britain.

The Flirts were cool.  They were a producer band.  Some dude, can't remember his name.  There are some funny lyrics on that record.

Quarterflash was a good band.  They were school teachers, utterly unhip, but somehow kind of cool.  The woman's name was Rindy Ross, which I thought was catchy.  They had a few hits actually, another one was "Take Me to Heart."  There was another I can't remember.

Was Pretty Poison's "Catch Me I'm Falling" a cover of the Real Life song, or a different song?

I liked Animotion at first, they seemed like an American Human League.  But they turned out to be way too cheesy.  They had a drummer named "Frenchy," come on!

"I Wanna be a Cowboy" is on my Guilty Pleasures list.

For The Hooters, I preferred "All You Zombies."

My choices:

Toni Basil

8675309/Jenny by Tommy Tutone - I liked a girl named Jenny once and a lot of people thought I liked the song because it reminded me of her, but the song actually reminded me of a A friend of mine who didn't stand a chance with any girl, and for the record still doesn't, but dreamed of calling them up and asking them out and them saying yes.

I melt with you by Modern English - I'm gonna say this to a girl some day and see what she say's in reponse. "Baby I'd stop the world, and  Melt with you"

Kylie Minogue certainly isn't. I'm pretty sure we all know that she had a few hits two years ago from her Fever album, such as "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Come Into My World", but in the 80s, I'm pretty sure that she had more hits than the "Locomotion" cover.

I wanted to vote for 7 or 8 of them but settled on these five:

Madness "Our House"
Swing Out Sister "Break Out"
Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen"

Was Pretty Poison's "Catch Me I'm Falling" a cover of the Real Life song, or a different song?

Different tune.  Pretty Poison's track is featured in the movie Hiding Out.  They had some minor club hits with "Nightime" and "When I Look Into Your Eyes".

I liked Animotion at first, they seemed like an American Human League.  But they turned out to be way too cheesy.  They had a drummer named "Frenchy," come on!

You don't know how many times I hear people say "Obsession" was done by The Human League.  ::)

Anyway, here's my Top 5 One Hit Wonders of the 80's (In no particular order):

Kajagoogoo - "Too Shy"
When In Rome - "The Promise"
Re-Flex - "The Politics Of Dancing"
King - "Love And Pride"
Anthony & The Camp - "What I Like"

I also like and sing "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell.

Men Without Hats doesn't belong here, either, neither does Quarterflash, Simple Minds, or A-ha. Thanks to "Pop Goes The World", "Self-Control", "Alive And Kicking" & "The Living Daylights", those bands were all TWO-hit wonders.

1. Jan Hammer "Miami Vice"
2. Moving Pictures "What About Me?"
3. M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume"
4. Johnny Hates Jazz "Shattered Dreams"
5. Tommy Tutone "867-5309"

And lest we forget the Buggles's "Video Killed The Radio Star", the song & clip that launched MTV!

Martika had a few hits.  "I Feel The Earth Move" was played quite a bit.  From what Ive heard from others, "More Than You Know" was a hit.  And from her other album "Martikas Kitchen", she had "Love Thy Will Be Done" that was played a lot, though it was early 90s.

I never heard "Kiss Me", but you JFTR, "Mexican Radio" was recorded by Wall Of Voodoo. Does anyone remember a song called "Gimme Hope, Johanna", or who recorded it? I think it was an anti-apartheid song from 88/89 "Johanna" being a reference to Johannesburg. Tonight I was in a store and heard Freida's lone hit, "There's Something Going On" from 1982. I guess if she wanted more hits, she should've stuck with Phil Collins as her producer! Let's see what other OHW's we can name!

its an 80's song that is made from a quote in the bible.  Kiss me with your mouth, your love is better than wine, but wine is all i have, will your love ever be mine....   if you never heard of it, you should check it out.  great tune.  ya i meant wall of voodoo.  call of the west was the name of the album.  ::)

I like Stephen Duffy/Tin Tin.  You must know he was in Duran Duran before the band broke big.  He split because he thought the band had no future.  D'oh!!
You might have told me this before, but what CD can I find Duffy's "Wednesday Jones" on?

Once and for all, Soft Cell was not a one hit wonder.  Yes, in America they had one hit, but in the UK they had lots.

I dug "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco when it came out... mostly because I had been watching "Young Frankenstein" over and over and it was cool to have a new spin on the song.  Also, "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco.  "You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party" could qualify in terms of radio play, but I guess that gets knocked out because the whole album was a hit?

A-ha had at least 5 hits and they've also made a comeback a couple years ago. Maddness had about 5 hits. TPau had a huge another hit called China in your hand in '87. Kylie surely had about 10 hits in uk during 87-91.

Try reading the top of the poll which states these were one hit wonders in the US.  Similarly I suspect if you (or I) were to post a one hit wonder poll all the americans here would be saying the exact same thing about some band or other

Yeah, it would depend on what country you're in. What might be a one-hit wonder in the US might not be one in the UK (e.g. Soft Cell, KajaGooGoo, T'Pau, etc.) For me, personally...I'm more aware of the UK hits than the US ones! :)

ALthough not chart hits this guy was (is?) still touring the pubs and clubs.  He was a regular every year at my dad sports and social club.  Luckily I always managed to avoid it.

Aren't these the ones who sang "I'm only a poor little sparrow"?  and also sang the "alley alley-o" bit and the chorus on Matchstalk Men by two blokes
(again see my comment under Mari Wilson)

"Walking In The Air" (the Snowman theme) by Aled Jones

Thought he also did "Oh, For the Wings of a Dove" and possibly some other stuff of a similar ilk.

I also considered whether Dr and the Medics had any more chart success.  Probably not, they always seemed embarrassed singing 'that' song when I saw them in concert afterwards.

Falco had another hit called "Vienna Calling". The radio version was stated as the '86 Edit on the 45 I remember.

I only picked 3 because, as Bobby says, lots of the others, though I like them, aren't one hit wonders here.

I picked Obsession by Animotion, Matthew Wilder's Break My Stride and I eat Cannibals by Toto Ceolo (as they were known here)

I think Animotion may have had another hit here also. They had a hit back in 89' with "Room to Move" with a different lead singer. Actually their 2nd top 40 here was a song called "Let Him Go", right after "obsession".

I picked

Mickey
Catch Me I'm Falling
Break My Stride
I Melt With You
Heart and Soul

However, if I had a sixth choice, The Promise would be on the list

I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say.....

I picked "Too Shy".....BTW, Autograph had another hit called "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me"

They had a few other minor hits. "Nineteen and Non-Stop", "She Never Looked That Good For Me", and "That's The Stuff" hit the charts, but never went as high as "Turn Up The Radio" obviously.

Berlin wasn't a one-hit wonder.

They also had "No More Words" and another one that I forget the title. (I am a man, I am a goddess, etc) were some of the words.

Although it mgiht be hard to believe but Kylie is actually still really big in Australia and despite her 80's hit, didn't actually get a Grammy till the new millenium, I dont like her music AT ALL but I admire her art of re-inventing herself over and over again.
Even if the mid 90's re-invention did kinda suck arse.

The Hooters had "All you Zombies" and "Where do the Children Go" which are two of my favorite all time hits. The Kings had a one-hit good one but I can't remember the name. Very good tune though.

Realistically though, I just want to piss off those random members and guests who come into threads and are all like "that's not a hit because I don't remember it"

I used to get certain (now banned) members all riled up when I'd debate them on what they thought was or wasn't a hit.  I just like to be difficult ;D

The U.S. and even Canada sometimes, can't recognize good songs a lot of the time.  There are a lot of songs by UK artists, and even artists from Europe in general, that had no hits here in Canada, yet I sometimes hear those songs on the radio.  One example being a 1984 single from Captain Sensible called 'One Christmas Catalogue'.  I hear it on the radio every December.

Yes.  It was a cover of Singin' in the Rain.  It didn't chart in the US, but it reached #46 in Canada and #49 in Germany.  Though some people don't consider that a hit, the text book definition of "one hit wonder" versus "hit single" says it is, and I agree.  It is a fun song!

I had no idea the music video for this was so tricked out, but...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsOJAaZ1a2A

This group is just barely a one-hit wonder band, since they had two other notable singles, which both peaked at #41.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47y5bo8wtqM

The movie it came from is supposed to blow chunks, but it appears the Stallone family has a surprising music background.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAuL_noJLoo

This is even more cheesily tongue-and-cheek than the stuff put out by her original band (the Go-Go's), but that happens to make it utterly addictive!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAsLDf-tYlg

Truly, this is the definition of 80s suaveness (even though I'm a lesbian).

Love and Rockets - So Alive

Here in Canada, their first single, a cover of the Motown song Ball of Confusion, reached the Top 20 in 1985.  They are considered part of the Second British Invasion even though it never charted in the U.S.  They had two other singles following So Alive that made the U.S. Hot 100, but nothing anyone would remember unless they had the album.

Of the ones listed in the OP poll, I can't decide between "Come on Eileen", "I Melt With You", and "The Promise" though I love many of these songs as well as many in the "Other" category.

By the way, Kylie Minogue is not a one hit wonder. She had a lot of hits (even in the backwards US) off of Fever, though I suppose you could argue that she's a one hit wonder if you only include 80's output, though even that is somewhat questionable.
