Subject: "You Can't Do That On Television"

Written By: woops on 06/08/04 at 8:33 pm

It's now back on Nickelodeon on Tuesday for this month on the channel's "U Pick: Old School" segment.

Everything to barth burgers, opposite sketches, green slime, and a young Alanis Morrissette.

Though it's up against other classic shows.

Throughout the week, other old Nick shows like "Hey Dude", "All That" (original), "Doug", etc. are shown by viewers' votes.

What shows are they up against?

Don't have a slight idea. (Trying to avoid a similar phrase)

To bad they don't show this more often.  Although I do like Nick, there could be a little more variety.

They should replace Nick at Night with Classic Nick and show all the old shows like Pinwheel , YCDTOTV and Today's Special.

I liked Christine, too. I thought for sure that she was going to go on to other things but, alas, she had disappeared into obsurity.

I read on a YCDTOTV related website that Christine McGlade now produces childrens shows for Canadian TV in Ottowa.

Just put in the phrase "Youcantdothatontelevision" into any search engine and you'll get plenty of web sites devoted to the show. ;)

I love that show! It aired on Canadian TV and eventually aired on Nick, and at one point Alanis Morrisette was on  the show.

I remember...

Barth, the chef and his bad cooking.
Green Slime "I don't know!"   ;D
The Opposite Sketch.
The announcer who hates the show.
The executioner and firing squad.
Ross, the owner who is a cheap skate, and hates the kids on the show.  ;D

Ah yes, and the collective years we spent watching each half-hour worth of filming.  Why did it work so many times that someone got locked in the changing locker?? or was that on the school set?  Am I wrong?

Les is still alive, but he's had two heart attacks since the show ended. But he still looks fondly at his years on YCDTOTV with his little co-stars.

I loved the opposite sketches. One of my faves was when Kevin Kubusheskie (one of the kids) was in detension with Mr "Where does the school's board find them and why do they keep sending them to me?" sheeshler.
Mr S: Why are you doing this detension?
Kev: I did my homework.
Mr S: You did your homework?.................This afternoon, you will be hanging out at the shopping mall, reading comic books and listening to rock music! ;D

Another one was when one kid was saying to another, "Did you hear how Alistair brought his English book to school? Yes and he hid it inside a Playboy magazine! Isn't that disgusting!"
Loved that show, would look forward to it every day after school. :)

For me, YCDTOTV was a local show (sort of).  I live about 2 hours away from Ottawa, where the show was filmed, and for it's first few seasons, it was broadcast as a local show on a channel called CJOH-TV which is an affiliate of CTV, which I've always been able to get as part of my basic cable package (I could even get it with just an old antenna signal).  It first aired in 1979 and in 1981, began to air in the United States.  I was super young when it came on, but I watched reruns of it quite often in the 80s.  For it's "Canadian" only first few years, the show would feature live performances from some of Canada's top artists

Here is a clip from the show's 1979 first season featuring ex-The Guess Who member Domenic Troiano and singer Roy Kenner performing a song called We All Need Love which at the time was a Top 40 single in Canada.  I often talk about this song because it's awesome and to find a clip of it performed from YCDTOTV is pretty cool!
