Subject: 80's word
Written By: saver on 05/20/04 at 5:40 pm
Sometimes readers ask if there's a word (or phrase) from the various decades....
For the 80's I can't get the words "SHINE IT" out of my mind!!!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWW! All I remember is every time a coworker had to decide what was more importnat to do on the job, the lesser got a "shine it"..
I finally said: GIVE ME SOME POLISH AND I WILL!
Sad to say, the 00 phrase seems to be "effit!"
I'm "saver", thanks for reading and sharing.

Oh wow, is ths board actually over 4 years old? My how time flies!
How about "Gnarley"?
"Tubular."
I can't even remember the last time I said "Grody to the max."
The 80's had so much great slang, including one that I may have been one of the first (if not the first) to use:
BFD.
I remember saying this as early as 1979, because in Idaho swearing was looked down on. While I had heard the term "Big Fracking Deal", I can't ever remember hearing BFD used. When I moved back to LA in January 1982, I took it with me. And while everybody would ask me what in the hell BFD stood for, I even had some humerous guesses (one of which was "Boise Fire Department").
Needless to say, this was in Van Nuys, the center of "Valley Girl" culture. While I can't prove I invented the phrase, I (and a few other friends of mine from the era) do believe I helped it get the exposure to make it part of the slang of the era.
My greatest fame: Bringing BFD to the masses 8) ::)

"Devastating"
was a word used to justify why at a private boys school we could then jump onto someones back with our elbow out! Copying what was then the WWF (not wrestling pandas)
But once it started, we were dopey teens slamming into each other. As long as you said "devastating" or even "Oh My"

Or even "grouse" which is a very Aussie word for good or beauty.
How about 80's slogans from TV or Film.
ALF was one - Ha No problem!
I did use a few quotes from Stripes (and still do!)
The "Aunt Jemima Treatment" even though we don't have it here, was always a fav!

"Lighten up, Francis" is a popular quote on Fark. I'm more inclined to use, "So it's sorta social--demented and sad, but social, right?"
