My favorite is Just The Way You Are, but since that was 70's, my fave 80's tune is Second Wind.

I love Uptown Girl. The longest time comes second and another song called 'This night (is mine)' - I love a lot of Billy Joel songs including Christie Lee, Keeping the faith, Easy money, Careless talk and Innocent man are brilliant as well.

I love em all!! I voted for "The Longest Time" though. Its such a great song, I love the a capella vocals!

I'm going against the tide here, Allentown is my absolute favorite.  It was a tough choice because Pressure and Say Goodbye to Hollywood are also two of my faves of his.

"Say Goodbye To Hollywood" was not 80's, and you left out 2 whole albums's worth of 80's singles. Nothing from Storm Front or The Bridge? We should be able to vote for "Modern Woman", "A Matter Of Trust", "Baby Grand", "We Didn't Start The Fire", "The Downeaster" and "The Night Is Still Young".

Anyway, I had to go other and vote for "Tell Her About It" off An Innocent Man. All the tunes on that record were great, including "The Longest Time", "Keeping The Faith", "Uptown Girl", "Leave A Tender Moment Alone", and the title track.

BTW, would his 1987 cover of "Back In The U.S.S.R." count?

"My Life" was from 1978, so you will find that poll on the 1970's board.  BTW, that is my all-time favorite Billy Joel song.  :)

In all fairness, "My Life" could be considered an 80's song since it was used as the theme to the early 80's sitcom, Bosom Buddies. How they ever chose BJ's song for a show about Tom Hanks in drag is beyond me, though!  :D

Thats how I first remember hearing the song, as the Bosom Buddies theme.  It sounds 80s too, I had no idea it was 70s.

Uptown Girl.....because of its uncanny Frankie Valli/Four Seasons-like sound....reminds me of the music I heard growing up..played on AM stations like WFIL(560 in Philly),WMID(1340 in Atlantic City...now ESPN Radio),and WABC(770 out of NYC!)..gawd I miss the days before FORMATS took over radio..

I like the video to Uptown Girl.  How it starts out with mechanics turning wrenches to the beat of the song, thats gotta be one of the cheeziest videos.

I'm surprised that his 1989 hit "We Didn't Start The Fire" isn't listed...so I guess that means I'll have to pick "other." "Uptown Girl" would be my second choice.

I was all set to vote for Tell Her About It until I saw Allentown and realized just how much I really love that song more :)

I agree that it was written and originally recorded in the 70's.  But remember that the LIVE version is included on "Songs in the Attic" from 1981.

So, even though I wouldn't go there, I can see how someone could confuse SGTH as an 80s song.

      What is rare with Billy Joel's music is that most of his songs are about more than as my english teacher once said - "I wanta woman or I lost a woman". I'm not sure if there is a favorite song although there are favorites. I guess his song "Extreme's" most matches my life.

      Another song "Allentown" came out when I lived as a kid in an economically depressed mining town in Arizona called Globe\Miami. If I were an music artist I'd do an adaptation called "Coppertown". I would replace lines like "our father's fought the second world war" to "our fathers fought the Vietnam War" and "spent the weekends on the Jersey shore" with "on Lake Roosevelt's shore".

      "Downeastern Alexia" is probably one of the best examples of "White Blues".
