Subject: "Return To Oz"/"Labrynth"
Written By: Heather on 04/27/04 at 4:13 pm
Of course I love the teen flicks, such as "Pretty In Pink" and "The Outsiders", but I also had a guilty pleasure for the fantasy films as well. Two that stand out for me is "Return To Oz" and "Labrynth". I love both of these movies, because they both deal with friendship, girl power, finding one's own way and growing up. I was just wondering, which one of these movies do you like best? Personally, I happen to like them both, but what about you guys?
Also, just curious, I hope this isn't true, but.......is the girl who played Ozma in "RTO" making porn films? And is it true that Jennifer Conelly has done a few nude scenes? Most recently in "Requiem For A Dream" and "House Of Sand & Fog"? I always thought she was so pretty and a great actress, and so refreshingly wholesome. I will lose no respect for her, because she won an oscar, is a mother, continues to act and is really nice in interviews. But, if any of you know anything, please answer.

I like both films too. I loved the fantasy aspect too that had the underlying themes of personal strength and the others you mentioned.
The girl who played Ozma (Emma Ridley) looks like she is into the porn thing. Just do a google search on her.
Jennifer did get a little nude, for the films you mentioned.

Oh, man! That is such a shame to see these girls getting sucked (no pun intended) into this horrible, sordid sex stuff!
Especially Jen Connelly. One of the things I always admired about her was her ability to be so naturally beautiful and so sexy without trying too hard like all these trashy Britney Spears types dominating the industry! Jen, for the record, is alot more beautiful than Britney and has alot more talent as an actress. As for "Ozma", that is horrible!
I hate to see all these girls (and guys) being forced to act all sexy and stuff.
Oh, while I'm on the subject, did you know that my #1 FAVORITE movie actress in the world, Meg Ryan, recently did this NC-17 movie called "In The Cut", where she is completely naked?! God, what is this world coming to, man?! All because they want to stay visible, in a totally "Britney Spears"/"Pamela Anderson" world of sex and exploitation, they degrade themselves. Man, I just hope that we never see Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock or Renee Zellwegger do any explicit nudity in films. In this seedy "Britney Spears" enviroment, we need at least a few people who are naturally sexy. Not to say that Meg and Jen aren't naturally sexy, but.......oh, dear, I am going way off topic here! I am so sorry......I just needed to say some stuff that has been bugging me for a really long time.

I have Labyrinth on DVD. I love it - especially the soundtrack 'Dance Magic Dance'. David Bowie was perfect in the role of the Goblin King.

Do you have the special edition? I want to get that one.
I couldn't picture anyone else in the roll of the Goblin King (except maybe Mick Jagger ;) )

I don't think Jennifer Connely was explicit. But I didn't see Requim or House.
But it is a shame they feel they have to reveal everything in order to remain in the spotlight.

I don't think so, Rubixgirl. It has a 56 minute 'Inside the Labyrinth' documentary on it though.

I have to admit that I kind of preffered "Labrynth", b/c the female lead was a bit stronger and more independent. Whereas Dorothy cried alot. And one thing that always bothered me about "Oz", "Alice In Wonderland" and all other fairytales was that the women always wore dresses. Well, those were in the days when women had to wear dresses b/c there were no pants for women, but still. I like dresses, but it was really refreshing to see our heroin wearing a pair of really hot jeans and a cool white top and vest.

I do like the movie Labrynth. I remember one time they were showing it and either the t.v. guide or a critic (can't remember which) said something about "starting Sting." I kept telling (where ever I read it) that they were wrong and that it was David Bowie but they never listened to me. ;)
As for the Oz movie, don't recall seeing it.

its funny you mention these 2 movies, because i remember back in the mid 90s, when Disney showed real movies, they had this friday night thing with 3 movies, and this one night it was Labyrinth, Return to Oz, and The Neverending Story.

Ahhh...."Neverending Story"!!! How cool was that movie (except for that one scene when Artreu's horse died, b/c I love animals and I also heard years later that the horse really did die.....I still sob whenever I watch that scene).
I wish Disney channel still showed movies like these instead of all these silly sitcoms and stuff.
If young girls of today saw "Labrynth", they'd be very inspired to follow their hearts.....and if young boys saw "Neverending Story", they'd be inspired and empowered, too.

BTW, Heather, "In The Cut" was not an NC-17 movie. It originally got an NC-17 in it's uncut form, but was released with an R rating in the theaters. It just seemed like an NC-17 because of the nudity and bizarre sex scenes. And yes, Meg Ryan is hot without the blonde hair.
Back on the subject, maybe, "Return to Oz" was weird in that Dorothy goes through electroshock therapy. It would probably have gotten a PG-13 rating by today's standards, but nobody would see a PG-13 film about Oz.
Labryrinth was basically a Muppet Movie with scarier Muppets. It worked because of Jim Henson and Jennifer Connelly. She is a better actress than Faruiza Balk, who played Dorothy in RTO, but I like Faruza's voice better. ;)

Ho ho! That's the one 1992thousand! This soundtrack so reminds me of the 80s.
Neverending Story was a classic as well - I just wish it ended on the first film. :-\

Me too. I love Neverending Story and the sequels just did not do the first one justice.
I think the reason RTO didn't do that well, b/c the subject matter was darker than in the first (i.e. electroshock) and it wasn't really a musical (if memory serves). But I liked it none the less.
I think Fairuza Balk did a good job w/ Dorothy Gale, those are some difficult red ruby slippers to fill. ;)

I kinda' preffered thw 1939original w/ Judy Garland, b/c I love Judy and it was more cheerful.
"The Dark Crystal" is also awesome!
A bit creepy at times, but alot of great special effects....for that time, anyway.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. There is also a collectors edition of the DVD too.

I got it on DVD awhile back, along with the collectors edition of The Dark Crystal, both are my favorite movies.

The Neverending Story is also a good movie, unfortunatly it's only aviable as a regular DVD. Part III was bad, the only good thing to come out of that film is that it was one of Jack Black's first films.
