Subject: Battle of the Bands - The Smiths or The Cure
Written By: eightiesfan on 04/27/04 at 2:29 pm
Do you like The Smiths or The Cure better, if you had to choose one?
Even though I like some of the Smiths tunes as well as Morrissey's solo stuff, I guess I would go with the Cure - one of my favorite songs of theirs, "Friday I'm In Love", was featured on the soundtrack of one of my favorite shows, 90210.

Speaking of 90210..they are releasing a DVD in June with the "pilot" episode of 90210. Also I have heard they will release the "graduation" episode on DVD too. I am hoping for a season to come out though.

Wow, very hard decision...The Cure were my constant companion through my up and down teen age years and young adult life...(is 36 still a young adult? Ha Ha). Lately I have been immersed in The Smiths so (forgive me Robert Smith) I'll say The Smiths only because I'm in a Smiths frame of mind!

Ah...one of the most notorious band rivalries ever. A rivalry that prompted hatred between both Robert Smith and Morrissey and spawned the infamous quote from Robert Smith:
"If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I'll eat meat because I hate Morrissey."
Who would I choose? Why...the band that sings "the songs that save your life!"
THE SMITHS!!! ;D

FYI:(from comcast news)
Morrissey to Appear on Craig Kilborn
NEW YORK - Morrissey, former lead singer of The Smiths, is making a rare appearance on late-night television when he spends a week on "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn."
The reclusive singer first appeared on Kilborn's talk show in September 2002. This time, he'll sit down for an interview on May 24 and will serve as the musical guest that night through May 28. He'll perform songs from "You Are the Quarry," his first studio album in seven years, which comes out Tuesday.
"We're thrilled to have Morrissey back," Kilborn said in a statement Thursday. "His music conveys the loneliness and despair of a man hosting a 12:30 a.m. talk show on CBS."
Morrissey, 44, is known for songs that juxtapose jaunty rhythms with depressing lyrics. His solo hits include "November Spawned a Monster," "Interesting Drug" and "Hairdresser on Fire."
His songs with The Smiths in the '80s include "Panic," "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" and "Girlfriend in a Coma."

Oy Vey... I go away for a few months and come back to a totally new 80's board!
~The longevity and large body of work certainly sway the vote to The Cure
~But The Smiths had an incredible influence after just a few recordings, so that would swing the vote back towards The Smiths.
~Of course the hairstyle of Robert (and in years back, the other band members) is so outstandingly impressive that alone it can force my vote to The Cure.
~Yet Moz never had the whining tone to his voice that Robert so deftly abuses so The Smiths really should have my vote.
~Then again that stark early post-punk sound really puts The Cure back on top.
~Morrissey wrote some of the funniest songs that most people take way too seriously (pretty hard thing to do) so that really makes me think that The Smiths should get the nod.
~Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I'm not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool; you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Oops, got a little side-tracked there…
~I just can’t stand to listen to The Smiths for more than 4-5 songs before I’m forced to yell out “Oh shut the heck up why don’t you!†at Morrissey and take off/out the vinyl/cassette/CD, so The Cure really should have my vote and … in the end they do.
I like The Smiths a lot and think “How Soon is Now?†is one of the greatest rock songs ever, but The Cure are to me, simply a better band, have written better and more music, and through Robert’s direction have been able to entertain me with new music for close to 30 years.

wow, very well thought out, Zed. and how nice of you to remind us of one of the best 80s movies as well! ;D
my vote is certainly for the cure. if we were talking about the cure vs. the combined works of morrissey and the smiths, i may be likely to vote differently. the cure was one of my first concerts way back when, so they somehow hold a special place in my memory. plus i love that robert smith has the sense of humor to make an appearance on south park. "disintegration is the best album ever!" that episode managed to boost my opinion for both matt and trey and for robert smith all at once.

Difficult choice for sure…pardon me if this is a little long winded…I can’t be brief in summing up my views on this.
First, I would say the Cure, I’ve listened to them since my freshman year in high school (’81) and would easily say a lot of their tunes would be in the “soundtrack†of my life.
Their sound was just so different than all the other music at the time…The Cure just made songs that were MENT to be made and I longed to hear.
Then, I’d say the Smiths, as once I matured a little, and grew a little I started to appreciate some of the lyrics that Morrissey was singing, he seemed to be a lot more personal to me (at the time) than the angst that Robert Smith has been crooning to, but I couldn’t directly connect with…Morrissey was saying things that I related to, that I didn’t DARE to admit to myself, much less anyone else, which pulled me in to the Smiths so easily.
But then the Cure’s been around a long time now, what’s it going on 30 years now? The band, its sound, & the lineup of its members have gone through a lot and still have managed to survive the trends of years past…
But, I really stopped being the “diehard†Cure fan after ’89 & “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me†was released, no offence to other Cure fans, but I think R. Smith had said and done all he had to say and went as far as he could go with the band by that time. The Cure just seemed to lose their freshness somewhat after that album, some of the songs/progressions start sounding alike…maybe I just got older, or (shamed to admit it) but they got too “popular†for me to feel connected to them anymore? Yea, I was one of those who felt that once they became so “bigâ€Â, they just weren’t “My band†anymore, shallow, ::)  yes, but that’s how I felt.
So, I probably go with the Smiths for both the short time they existed, they were short sweet, went out “on top†so to speak. Kind of like a rare berry that is only around for a few weeks in season…Powerful, passionate, sweet and the taste sensation over quickly with a brief, but tart & bitter aftertaste.
More importantly for me, and more than some would like to admit, Johnny Marr was (IMO) the better and more creative songwriter than Robert Smith. Not that Robert Smith is a bad songwriter, but consider the course and scope of music styles and imagination that Marr took on and accomplished in the brief time the Smiths were around.
For me, Morrissey’s lyrics not withstanding, Marr’s music & songwriting made the accomplishment of The Smiths as a band that more impressive.

Quite honestly I dont know of even one song by The Smiths, or any songs by The Cure besides "Love Song". Did either of them have much airplay? Or have any songs that were quite popular that I might know?

For Smiths, you might know of "How Soon Is Now," especially if you've ever seen Charmed. The version they use in the TV show is a cover, but it's still the same song. As for the Cure, you might also know the song Friday I'm In Love. That one gets played quite a bit still on the radio. As a sidenote, I used to think that song was by Modern English. (you know, the ones who did I Melt With You)
My vote is the Smiths. :) Don't know much about the Cure beyond their songs Killing an Arab, Lovesong, and Friday I'm In Love. Plus the Cure have just never appealed too much to me, for some reason.

Definitely The Smiths!
But I also quite like the Cure...
Difficult choice.
"How soon is now" cannot be compared to, let's say, "A Forest" but both songs are equally great.
But still... definitely The Smiths!
