I voted Def Leopard. Pure some sugar on me, Love bites and Animal are excellent.
I like Europe's 'Final countdown' but I'm not going to vote 'other' based on one song.

I put Poison. I like the hair/glam bands. Wasn't into the heavier metal, like Megadeath and Metallica.

Rubixgirl - I'm with you about Poison, but for me Metallica is a close second.
I heard not long ago that Brett Michaels signed a contact with a country record label.

I love Stryper, too. I would have loved to have seen them this year but they aren't coming to my area.
I chose other because I don't just have one fave...Stryper, White Lion, Europe...I love the hair metal.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Anthrax(remember 'I'm The Man' and 'Bring the Noise' as well as 'Indians'?)
Venom('Black Metal' is one h*ll of a LOUD and HEAVY album!)

Stryper KICKS dude!!
On the list hands down...Guns 'N' Roses
Write in...toss up twixt Megadeth and Metallica. That's for the Eighties.
In the Nineties, Megadeth continued to get better and better and Metallica flushed themselves down the terlet (that's Archie-Bunker-speak for toilet...).
Imagine, a heavy metal band cutting their HAIR!! I mean, metal bands are like Samson...their power is in their HAIR, man. Sheesh...

Back in the 80's, my favorite metal band was Guns N' Roses. It was as if this cool 70's badass hard-rock band traveled forward through time and dropped themselves right in the middle of the poofy-hair-spandex cheese-metal era. I loved it.
Right now I really like a lot of Ozzy's stuff from the early 80's Randy Rhoads era. (One of the best guitarists ever!)

Guns N' Roses followed closely by The Crue ;)
I grew up with my older cousins who were the biggest Crue fans going. We used to do little concerts in the basement with our imaginary instruments :P After seeing the video for "Wildside" I wanted to be just like Tommy Lee, unfortunately I have come up a few inches short ;)

Mötley Crüe followed by Bon Jovi.
How is it possible that Poison's got as many votes as Mötley??? They are not even close compared to Mötley's achievements and how many hits they had....maybe 2-3.

As for "overall" selection of songs, I went with Van Halen 'cause I'm maybe one of the few who likes both eras. Dave & Sammy both have some cool solo material as well ("California Girls" and "One Way to Rock" being my favorites, respectively).
I was very tempted to put Bon Jovi on there though - simply 'cause Slippery When Wet was the very first "metal" album I ever heard, let alone was into (yeah, it was poppish, softer metal, even for 1987 let alone now, but still). I can remember when my mom bought that tape, I was listening to it alot. Took me a bit to get used to it, but once I did, I guess you could say I was a pretty cool 5 yr old, LOL! :)
However, outside of Slippery, the only songs by them I've been completely crazy about are "Runaway" and "Bad Medicine" although their first 4 albums are fairly good start to finish.
Basically it was SWW that got me "used to" the sound of heavy metal, thus the reason I was able to get into, say Judas Priest, Ozzy or even Metallica several years later. That's why I still would put them into the metal categoty, however laughable that may be to most people! ;)
However, I should say I've never liked hardcore or death metal at all. Maybe a couple of Pantera's less brutal songs if I'm in the right mood, but other than that, I like more 'catchy' metal.

One Hard Rock band I really liked were The Headpins. They were a Canadian group formed by Brian McLeod of Chilliwack. They had several great songs that were mainly only hitsi n Canada, though they did reach the U.S. charts once in 1983 with the fantastic "Just One More Time"

Actually, I didn't think of Spinal Tap until after I'd selected Van Halen. I mean, I hated ALL those bands back then, but retrospectively, Van Halen was definitely the best.
