Subject: help with 80s song that deals with social issues

Written By: Evan Ross on 5/19/2000 at 12:21 a.m.

Hi,

I need some help finding a song from the 80s, doesn't matter when it was, just as long as it's 80s, but that deals with the social issues of the time. I need this for a project for History, so if anyone knows a good song, please E-mail me at halberd55@yahoo.com.

THank you for your time

Evan

there are a couple i can think of:

West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys (Upper Class girl falling for lower end boy; mixture of social classes an implied no-no) Tell Me Why - Bronski Beat (Homosexual gets beat-up by skinheads, questioning why; this was at a time when this was rampant in England) Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol (masturbation; again, quite looked-down upon especially at the time)

to name a few....

hope this gives you some ideas.

Erasure: "Hideaway" (homosexuality) Depeche Mode: "People Are People" (racism) Mike and the Mechanics: "Living Years" (Lack of communication between young and old) Frankie Goes to Hollywood: "War" (should be obvious) Midnight Oil: "Beds are Burning" (environmental issues) USA for Africa: "We Are the World" (starvation in Ethiopia, Africa) Band Aid: "Do They Know It's Christmas" (starvation in Africa)

U2 (and others) did songs relating to other eras other than the 80s, weren't sure of you wanted songs like that or just those specifically relating to the 80s so you might want to check out "Pride (in the name of love)" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" as well.

There are, of course, tons of others...
