Subject: Were mohawk haircuts an 80s fashion trend?
I have an 80s party to attend and am looking for some fashion advice. Every so often I still see people with really tall mohawk haircuts, but wasn't this trend originally started in the 80s? I believe it started in the punk rock scene and that some of them were spiked and/or brightly colored. I've been trying to find some pics from back then to confirm this, but nothing yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes really tall mohawk haircuts were popular in the punk rock scene in the 80's? I believe they started in the late 70's. Some of them were spiked and/or brightly colored.
A good example I can think of off the top of my head would be for you to go rent "Body Double" from (1984). It stared a young Melanie Griffith. There is a scene where they are in a punk club that has a good example of a spiked colored mohawk.
FYI: This scene with the punk club was part of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "RELAX" video which was ban (the second version I think). There were 3, the first two were ban from MTV. The second one I actually saw on Night Flight a long time ago. The third one is the live concert.

mohawks started with punk--in the 70's, not the 80's. you'd do better to wear a mullet.

What's a mullet? Long & feathered was how i remember the guys hair. No hairspray though(that would silly). If you choose this route, i suggest a long straight wig, although a long curly one would get the laugh. have fun!

Yeah, Viv, what is a mullet? hehe The boys I had crushes on in junior high had "rat tails". The longer the better. Ah...Greg...*sigh*

a mullet (or "bi-level" as they were sometimes called) is that terrible style where the back is long & the sides are cut real short. the top is usually parted in the middle & feathered, though not always. i know this isn't just an ohio thing, 'cos i've traveled all over the country and, UNFORTUNATELY, saw this hideous style just about everywhere. they even did an article on it in entertainment weekly (stating that, GOD FORBID, it might be coming back "in")
