Subject: 80's music

Written By: Jeanna on 4/7/2000 at 6:27 p.m.

Hi everyone!

What a site, I've been having a blast looking over all the memories (Class of '83). Can anyone deny that the 80's had probably the biggest variety of music of any era? I mean, take a look at the Music Review page. All forms of "rock-n-roll" are represented. Synth-rock/pop, dance music, power pop, heavy metal, hard rock, roots/working-class rock, social consciousness-rock, folk-rock, folk music, jangle-guitar rock, (or whichever terms you use for it) - it's all there! I have albums from each 'catagory' for whichever mood I'm in. And it all seemed to all to be there in a glorious mixture where you never new what type you were going to hear to see next on MTV when the "M" actually meant something. Remember when MTV actually played music videos!?!?

Anyway, luv to all, Jeanna

Me and my friends have echoed your comment concerning MTV several times. I remember the times when MTV pretty much showed nothing but music videos and many of us used out TVs as our radios. We simply turned on MTV and had it as background entertainment for all the other things we were doing. Then there came a time when MTV started all the game shows and special programs - making us wonder what happened to the videos. I pretty much switched to VH1. When I can, I like to look at some of the early MTV videos - back when the record companies were still leary about investing too much money into them. It's interesting to compare those with the movie-quality video productions that soon followed. For example, there is an old Police video (I think it was "Walking on the Moon") that has them simply standing around a military airport. There were other videos that were shot with camcorders (I seem to recall "Our Love's in Jeopardy" and "Rockin' the Casbah" being such).

I hate to be contrary here, but I think that there are way too many musical genres nowadays, for example: house, techno, electronica, fusion, jazz fusion, metal, thrash, "alternative," etc. What I like about the 80s is that it was simpler! And, the music was *better*! The music was happier, too! I'm so tired of all the whining in music now. Anyway, there's my 2 cents.

Clancy (Class of 93, but always in 80s spirit)

P.S. I wish I were in the class of 88 so I could say the rhyme, "Love is good, sex is great, we're the class of 88!!" :-)

The music was so much better from the 80s. It seems now that all these new 90s artists are trying to copy the 80s and they all suck. I keep hearing the new version of the Tiwsted Sister song, "We're Not Gonna Take It." It's horrible!! I have yet to hear a good remake of an 80s song (I'll make an exception to Blue Monday, cuz I think Orgy did an OKAY job). The 80s music was much better and much more creative. If you listen to a lot of 90s songs and stuff, they all begin to sound the same with the same beats and stuff. I agree with all of you. -Liz
